I have been out of the game for a little bit. I haven't followed the latest and greatest for a couple years now and hoping some of you can help me with a decision. I'm currently having a rifle built that is on the lighter side...7.5-8lbs for my wife. Primary use is shooting steel to 1000 and hunting. Obj lens - I would like to stay 50mm or under as she will only be using a stock pack. I would like to stay under 2lbs in optic weight. FFP and MOA are a must. I would like locking turrets but not nearly as important as a zero stop.

I already have an AMG and do not want another Vortex branded optic.

Thanks for your help in advance.

^^^ Ditto on mag range and price range. You're going to limit yourself with MOA, one scope that pops to mind is the Kahles K24i Gen III with MOAK reticle, should be able to find some great deals on the classifieds as some Kahles owners are moving to the new K525i, dealers also might be offering some great deals. No need to stay at 50mm objective or less because my 56mm work just fine with my stock packs.

Mag range would be something near 25X . After some thought I think I'm just going to take the dive into MIL optics and start selling off my MOA stuff. This would open us up to some other offerings.

I would say no more than 2500ish.

56mm is out of the question... she is a very small person and she can't get comfortable behind something with that high of an optical centerline.

The Vortex AMG with the EBR-7 MOA reticle should come pretty close to meeting all of your criteria. I’m sure there are many others that fit the bill but, I have an AMG and my fiancé and I both really like it.

I am not understanding this, we are talking about 3mm higher than a 50mm objective, that is less than 1/8" higher??? So you add a strip to the stock pack, she doesn't have to lift her head higher, the stock pack should take care of this without having to adjust her cheekweld. Saying "she can't get comfortable" makes me think you think she'll be lifting her head higher, but it's all about where her cheekweld will be and if the stock pack is setup properly I doubt she'd notice a difference.

I have both 50mm and 56mm obj optics sitting at home now. The optical centerline of the 50mm when mounted is already borderline acceptable to her with all the velcro the Triad pack came with. I could mill down the back of the pic rail to clear the ocular adjustment of the AMG to utilize lower scope rings, but I'd rather not hack on it if I don't have to. In hindsight I would have opted for an adjustable stock, but that didn't happen. I'm also a form is equal to function person. I'm picky about my stuff and the way it looks . I'm not going to pile on Velcro to make a 56mm scope work when the truth of the matter is I don't have to as there are clearly other offerings out there that can work.

I’m looking at scopes. In what ways is the AMG lacking?
It isn’t, it’s a fantastic scope for what it is, just different strokes for different folks
"Pwheatstraw" I responded to your PM and I will do so here as well. The AMG is a great optic and I actually really like mine. The issue is more so to do with Vortex and their QC. Most of my issues stem from the PST stuff and I just don't don't to deal with it again as I know how my luck goes.

"wjm308" As I posted above, I do like my AMG a lot. The sad thing is it has about everything I want in an optic for her. My wife and I both like to change out stuff occasionally. This is part of the reason I sell a rifle or 2 every couple years. I enjoy the creation part of building a rifle and she likes to have all the new stuff that comes out....speaking of that I wish manners wouldn't have come out with the Arctic color scheme..... Looks like I have to order one of those soon.

    Mueller 8-32x44 MOA 26oz, $259.00, 1/8MOA clicks. From Midway.

I have been using this scope for years with no issues, and now own three of them. I think they are a little bit of a compromise (mainly during low light usage), at a seriously bargain price. Uses medium 30MM rings, maybe high rings to get the 50mm-like Objective's optical axis height; maybe not, you may prefer the lower height. FYI, the quick focus eyepiece is the more modern, larger diameter style, so low rings may not be a viable option.

Edited to add Mueller link, including specs.

All Mfg run into occasional QC issues...

However, I would rather be a repeat customer of a Mfg that acknowledged, and/or made a good faith effort to correct any said issues (and if necessary replace the product), than to a Mfg that flat out denies any QC issues exist, and instead of contacting me to address my concerns prior to returning it, simply ships it back after I specifically requested that I be contacted prior to it being returned.

I purchased a scope that was in a factory sealed box after giving the display model (with battery) a hands on inspection. After installing it without preforming the same inspection (my f**k up) I found the elevation turret was binding/tighter in spots than the display model, especially while returning to the zero stop, as well as excessive artifacts/bloom in the illuminated reticle.

    "Comments from Steiner Optics Support:

Your scope was fully evaluated and found to be functioning correctly. There is no issue to repair and as such no replacement will be offered. Refunds are not offered. Your scope has been shipped".

I've had at least half a dozen scopes at half the price point of the above T5Xi 5-25x56, and have never had a problem.

For a few dollars more, a GEN II Razor 4.5-27x56 EBR-2C MRAD now proudly resides above my .300 Norma, and (in my opinion) it makes the previous occupant pale by comparison.

I'm not suggesting the above scope is a fit for your wife, but with the exception of steel which type of game animal will it be used for, and what is the caliber?

Although the above doesn't really matter in the end if QC is a concern... pay for the convenience (sales tax) and support a brick-and-mortar store that will allow you to run the turrets of the scope you decide to purchase throughout the range of adjustment, and install the battery (if it applies) so that you can check an illuminated reticle for artifacts/bloom.

I see what you are saying but every vortex optic I have purchased has either been swapped several times by the dealer or replaced by Vortex. I'm not talking about 1 or 2... Or even 5 or 6 scopes here. In the end I do have a hand picked AMG and it is an awesome optic for the money, but I don't like having to deal with that scenario. I buy an optic to use it and if something happens use the warranty. I shouldn't have to use the warranty multiple times prior to even strapping the thing to a rifle. Every Nightforce I have bought has been great and I'm leaning that way again... I did buy a nice NXS here about a week ago but it is a 56mm so it will go back on the PX once I decide what I want on her rifle. Thanks for the heads up on Steiner as well.

Since you are switching to mrad, your options open up a bit.

The one that immediately comes to mind is Leupold Mark 5 3.6-18x44. it is a nice and company scope with a lot of capability.

If you stay with MOA, also consider Maven RS1 2.5-15X44.

If you are willing to step up in price a little, I still think Tangent Theta 3-15x50 TT315M is the best of the breed. Also more money and a not more magnification is S&B 3-20x50.

Naturally, previously mentioned Nightforce 4-16x42 is a very good option

I have a 8lb bolt gun in 280 Remember that is superbly accurate and it is waiting for the upcoming Tangent Theta Hunter 3-15x50, but that will probably also be above the $2500 limit.
