Need Some AK Input (possible first SBR)

I'll keep it simple:

I have a converted Saiga. It has an ultimak gas tube/rail and Bolton gas block/front sight.

I'm upgrading it a little more and need to change out the flash suppressor to one of the Griffin Armament taper mount devices for my new Rex Silentium MG7. They make a mini flash suppressor in 14-1LH but its out of stock everywhere...and who knows when the hell that'll be back in stock. Rifle is currently threaded for 14-1LH.

My options:
1.) Wait for who knows how long for the Griffin 14-1 flash suppressor to come back in stock
2.) Cut and re-thread the barrel 3/4" shorter to 1/2-28 and pin/weld the 1/2-28 Griffin Flash Suppressor.
3.) Go with a different mount system for the suppressor (1.375x24). Not sure who even makes muzzle devices offered in 14-1LH
4.) SBR it and cut back to 12" and thread to 1/2-28 and put on the same flash suppressor.


Is ~4" less barrel worth the SBR stamp? Those who have AK SBR's, how do you like them? For some reason, I am apprehensive about going SBR even though I have 3 silencers. Besides the always frustrating fee to the crown, I always feel like I'm giving up something by going SBR...

Rethreading the barrel isn’t a terrible idea; it will ensure that the threads are concentric with the bore.

I went pin and weld.

I've found that the 12" SBR'd AK's don't handle too noticably different from 14.5" AK's. I don't think it's really worth SBRing an AK unless you really want an SBR or unless you're going with a super short krink length that will feel noticably different.

I've a AKS74U with a 8 inch barrel. Muzzle blast and fireball are quite impressive. That wouldn't be a problem with a suppressor though.

Thats what I was wondering for sure. I have the standard gas system and it seems that the 12" range is about max for reliable cycling, or at least thats what the internet seems to think. So I suppose there isn't much difference. I won't have my suppressor on the gun all the time, so I definitely want it to cycle with and without well.

The little Griffin flash suppressor is pretty light as well, but is only 1.8". So barrel will end up being about 15" or so. Plus the suppressor. Biggest reasoning behind the possible 12" barrel is that with the suppressor on, it'd end up being about ~16" total with the can on.

JMac has all sorts of 14x1 stuff. Pretty sure all the mounts are keymo.

I did see those. The Keymo Mount system is like $250 and adds 1.25" to the back of the suppressor. While that is a fix, I don't think I want to add that much length and weight. Plus I'd have to change two other rifles to the KeyMo muzzle devices.

I did find a place that'll do cut, re-thread, and pin/weld for $170. Not sure if thats a good deal or not. My last muzzle device on this gun I threaded my self with a bore alignment tool and it turned out well. That being said, I'd have to be a lot more careful given a can will go on it. But if I did do it myself, and a used a bore rod and it all lines up then I'd be good to go right? My can is also a .358 can so gives me a little more wiggle room.

Id just wait for your preferred muzzle device to come in stock.

If you are going to go to the trouble and cost to cut/thread/pin and weld, I would just go straight to 12" SBR and reduce weight that much more and get some increases handling.

The awesome thing about 762x39 from my experience is that from 12" to 16" the difference is 50ish fps. So the the efficiency is there, and with a suppressor would be a fun rifle to drive IMO. You could also upgrade to an adjustable gas block or KNS piston to help tune the gun to its sweet spot for reliability suppressed and unsuppressed.

I called Griffin Armament, and they said probably 2-4 months before the 14-1 LH flash suppressors are ready to go out.

My rifle definitely seems overgassed. So if I did cut down to 12, I'm hoping that would be the sweet spot lol, or at least close to it.

Which Rex did you get? Do you like it? What have you shot through it?

I have the MG7 in .358 bore. Right now it sits on my .357 lever action, which is pretty damn fun. Light .38 loads sound like a pellet gun out of it.

The Griffin Plan A mount is in the mail. That will go on the back of it, as it takes any 1.375x24 mount in the back. My AK, the levergun, and for now my 6.5 bolt gun will all get Griffin taper mount devices so I can change it back and forth between them. In the future, I'll probably get another can from Rex for just my bolt guns, and use this one for my lever gun and AK only.

Its a nice silencer. Love the raw heat treatment. I prefer shorter and fatter cans, and this fits the bill. Lifetime warranty. Serial number is on the bacck by the mount so it can be repaired if you have a baffle strike.

I only have 3 cans, and have only shot maybe 10 different cans, so I can't quite comment on tone of the suppression, but its inexpensive, lightweight (reasonably), and very well made. The attention to detail is definitely top notch.

They also allow you to make a custom length can on their website. The MGX. You can do anything from a 3 baffle up to like 12-15 or something like that lol. I'm happy

When going through some other threads and one of the two videos out there. I noticed some people saying they sometimes have first round pop. Have you seen this? Also, have you tested it on the 6.5? That's what I'm going to be using it on.

I have not noticed it on my lever gun. I have ran both 38 light loads, and full power .357 HSM Bear loads (180gr at 1500fps).

When I get my Plan A mount in and the taper mount muzzle devices, I can re-assess if thats an issue. I have fired it at night a couple times and haven't noticed any first round flash or flash at all.

I am interested to see how it does on my 6.5 though.
