my LRP-07 with 18" barrel seems to prefer 168gr over 175gr for the groups i've shot at 100yds -- don't have a range with a longer distance close by... in fact i was doing a little battle between my JP and Sig SSG 3000 today and shot AE 168gr OTM, Prvi 168gr Match, and FGM 175gr. shot the groups using a Harris bipod and rear sandbag and the same Bushnell ET 4.5-30x50mm scope on both rifles.
some caveats here...
me: i'm probably nothing close to a precision shooter. i've never been trained to shoot. i just like going to the range. i also tend to screw up the 4th shot of my 5 shot groups, so for most of the number i list below, you can assume that these are 4 shot groups. also, i don't think i was shooting particularly well today; was definitely more consistent last weekend.
the rifles:
the Sig is a heavy barreled, bolt action with a 24" barrel (1 in 11 twist) and 2-stage trigger.
the JP is a light contour barreled, semi-auto with 18" barrel (1 in 10 twist) and single stage trigger.
and now for some results...
Sig SSG 3000
best group today was 0.375" ctr to ctr using AE 168gr OTM.
my best group yet with that rifle has been 0.25", also using AE 168gr OTM.
when i do my part, i tend to be sub 0.50" with the AE 168gr OTM.
best group i shot with FGM 175gr today was 0.875".
my best group yet with FGM 175gr has been 0.3125".
when i do my part, i tend to get groups between 0.6" and 0.75".
best group with the Prvi 168gr today was also 0.875".
my best group yet with Prvi 168gr has been 0.50".
when i do my part, i tend to get groups between 0.6" and 0.875".
i've also shot Norma 168gr through the Sig before and that also tends to fall in the 0.6" to 0.75" range.
so at least for me, and shooting at 100yd, i have seen my best and most consistent groups with AE 168gr.
JP LRP-07
best group today was 0.75". got that with both AE 168gr OTM and Prvi 168gr.
those are also the best groups i've gotten from the JP so far.
when i do my part, i tend to get groups between 0.875" and 1.25" with the AE 168gr OTM
and with the Prvi 168gr, i tend to be between 1" and 1.5"
best group today with the FGM 175gr was 1.0".
my best group yet with FGM 175gr has been 0.875".
when i do my part, i tend to get groups between 1.1" and 1.7"
so again, for me and shooting at 100yds, the AE 168gr OTM seems to be the winning round.
going forward, i want to get to the point where i can consistently get between 0.25" and 0.4" with the Sig SSG 3000 (and for all 5 shots!). i think the AE 168gr OTM is the round that will be able to get me there, just need to do my part better.
for the JP, i'm actually going to be a bit disappointed if i can't start getting some 0.5" groups each time i shoot. i'm sure that rifle has that accuracy in it, but i haven't been able to get it there yet. and as with the Sig, i think the AE 168gr OTM is the round i'll be shooting when i eventually get there.
