Guys I hope you can help me. I want a rock solid 5.56 auto rifle, it will be my first most likely my only for few years at least. I have about a $16-1700.00 maximum budget but would like to spend less. A little history here. I am a shooting enthusiast. I like ARA & RBA benchrest rimfire competitions. I shoot a lot of skeet and I shoot NRA high power matches. At my club we shoot these NRA matches every month at 300yrd from benchrest. I shoot pistol silhouette matches and I hunt. I don't do the defensive stlye shooting sports. My reason for wanting an AR style rifle is purely to have one and to have a top quality one. Just for shooting targets, plinking and god forbid, to have it for what it's designed for. Anyway I've kind of narrowed my choice down to a Colt LE6940. I prefer the flat top for the sighting options; so flat top, a collapsible stock, and a 5.56 chamber are really my only requirements. My question is what am I paying for? Why do some AR's cost nearly 4 thousand dollars? I know the colt is mil spec but I also know that can be good and bad at the same time. I have zero AR experience so I'm in the dark on what these differences are on what seem to be very similar rifles. My worry is that Colt has a bid to meet when they build a weapon. Are there corners being cut to save money that could affect me? Is there a weapon out there that is superior for $3-400.000 more. Any suggestions for a good battle rifle and why would be greatly appreciated. If there is a good reason not to buy the Colt, I'd like to here that also. Thanks guys in advance for suffering a semi auto rifle newbie.
