Musicians Friend runs some deals from time to time, eBay and your local pawn shop are good starting points.

Though there is a chain in California, that all taken together sold more, Chuck Levin consistantly is the largest volumn=e music dealer in the world, and has the best prices. Ive bought a couple Martin guitars from them, and if you know how to bargain, you can get up to 40% off retail...not everytime, but its possible.
It might be a nice trip for you and the kid to drive up and look in person.
