Never going to reload

Quick question. I will never be willing to reload. Would I be best to buy a 308 rifle or 6.5 Creedmore based upon ammo choices. Thinking Bergarra HMR type rifle for PRS game.

Thanks in advance.

The question at this point would be: How much are you going to shoot, and how willing are you to replace barrels? 308's regularly go over 10,000 rounds. 6.5 Creedmoor's seldom make it to 2,500.

Since your primary purpose for the rifle is for the PRS game, I think the 6.5 is generally going to suit you better. Yes, there is a barrel life trade off, but you will be shooting matches wherein you are shooting between $100 for one day matches and $250-300 for ammo for two day matches. I think that the ballistic advantages you get by going with 6.5 outweigh the cost of a good replacement barrel.

6.5 Creedmoor is flatter shooting with less wind drift. For PRS, that is the better cartridge. But, if you are not going to reload then you are not going to be invested in all of the sundries necessary to reload. As such, you are only married to a cartridge choice for as long as you suffer to have the barrel around. I'd go 6.5CM, but if you choose the 308 you are only a barrel change away from the other- and vice versa (they share an action, bolt face, and magazines). Deciding not to reload is- in my mind- the much lower stress option, as long as you can find your flavor of ammunition stocked somewhere.

If I was only gonna dabble in a local club match I'd get a 223 shooting heavyweights and not worry about barrel life. Way cheaper to shoot so that means lots of practice, and factory ammo selection is endless. Light recoil, etc. etc.

6 Creed is cheaper to shoot than 6.5 Creed if you are buying factory ammo. The Hornady Black 105 HPBT is very consistent and is $180 per 200 round case plus shipping at various online retailers. That's what I'd do to compete if I didn't reload.

This is only if buying lesser quality ammo such as black.

6.5 creed is about 10cent cheaper per round when comparing say 108eld vs 140/147 eldm.

Also not mentioned is recoil. With the heavier .308 bullets favored for competition, the .308 kicks noticeably harder. Recoil is a significant factor in many top competitors' using 6mm or even heavy .224-caliber rounds. In my mind, ballistic advantage coupled with less recoil make the 6.5CM a clear choice over the barrel-life advantage of .308.

If you can do "Tactical Divisions" for comp or just don't care because you're not in the top 5%...

AND budget is a concern, just stick with .308

Overall, the choices in factory ammo are about equal really with new development more so in the 6.5CM area.

Let everyone else worry about getting the best gear and comparing themselves to the top PRS competitors... most of us don't have the time or funds to even compete driving around the country much less train that often/$$$

I'd rather get a .308 and enjoy shooting for cheaper and more OFTEN, not even thinking about the barrel than get a 6.5 or a barrel burning round that kills my barrel in under 1500rds.

I've owned both and 6.5CM is definitely the more efficient round by a huge margin. But it makes no difference if you're not winning something for it.

what fits YOUR needs and budget?

Bergara makes great barrels, I know one guy with the rifle and loves it.
