"NEW" .22 mag ammo...

Re: "NEW" .22 mag ammo...

just went to RFC to see what they got, the same ol' same ol'.

no mention of group sizes through a rifle at 50 and 100 yards.

but also picked up some info that speer has this out:

http://www.speer-ammo.com/products/short_brl.aspx

perhaps through a rifle the speer may be subsonic?

speer 40 gr.
hornady 45 gr. - the 5 extra grains may be better for bigger game.

Re: "NEW" .22 mag ammo...

The real advantage the 22wmr has out of a pistol for defense is the better bullet construction, which gives much better penetration

Re: "NEW" .22 mag ammo...

From the Link:
Powder
Optimized for short-barreled firearms, the 22 WMR features clean burning propellants with low flash and blast to help protect night vision.
-

also possibly the powder used my not burn that great for a long push out a rifle barrel length . sounds like it's real quick on the total burn just for pistol ?
.

Re: "NEW" .22 mag ammo...

1700 fps out of a 24" barrel - if my 882ssv will hold a pattern with this stuff it would be possibly the best hunting option available for song dogs...I've been waiting for quite a while for ammo like this to come along. the Federal 50 grain offering just sucked. my rifle was throwing a (literally) 2 foot group at 100 yards with it and most impacts were keyholed. maybe a bad batch, maybe just my rifle doesn't like them, whatever the case I shot 20 out of the box and threw the rest away. Can't wait to get my hands on some of this stuff though.

Re: "NEW" .22 mag ammo...

wasn't a bad batch of those federals, unless of course the ones i got were from your batch!

same thing here, too big of groups to be effective.

i found out it's not quite out yet, i think around april.
i think it'll be that fast burning powder for the short barrel and SOFTCOCK above eluded to.

but you know how these rimfires are, what you think will work doesn't, and what you think won't, does!

guess we'll have to wait and see until it comes out.

Re: "NEW" .22 mag ammo...

I havent tried or even seen the 45 grain hornady's and im 10 minutes from Cabela's. Maxi Mag 40 grain is the usual, not by choice. I use the Winchester Super X 34 grain jhp. Killed anything from 40 lb beaver to deer. That round is absolutly awesome. It also groups the best at 100 yards thru my bull barrel marlin. My newest round is the 30 jhp, but its to early to tell if I like them better because I havent had a 100 yard grouping session. They will blow a squirrel in half though, I will tell you that.
