im starting a 30-06 build out of my current remy 700 action, iv been searching and reading a lot but can not find the point blank answer im looking for. by dilemma is with the barrel, what twist rate should i go with, it will be a mcgowan barrel with shilen # 7 or 8 contour finished at 22". shooting no less than a 165 grn and so far no more than 180 and have imr 4350 on the shelf currently. obviously this is a budget build, shooting no more than 500 yards. any help thanks.

Anything from 10-12 would be fine. Some top builders go with 11.25 or near that. You will not know the difference in any of them. I would go with 12.

From what I can remember, the 11.25 twist was meant for 175gr. bullets. I'm sure it performs well with other weights. I know the popular choice for a .30-06 is 10" twist. This would allow you to shoot anything from 155 up to 220 effectively. If you are dead set on only shooting light bullets I would also suggest looking into 10-12" twist barrels.

Re: new 30-06 build, need some input

Optimum barrel twist depends on the bullet you want to use, and it's not as simple as looking at the bullet weight. Bullet length, for example, is a factor as well. There are some ~200gr bullets that require 1:8 twist rate or faster for proper stability (i.e. GSC 197gr match bullet). Best thing to do is decide on the bullet you want to use predominantly, and then look up the manufacturer recommended twist rate for that bullet. I have a 1:10 30-06, and I'll be using the AMax 208gr bullet (primarily because of the lower cost, but it also has nice BC).

Thanks all that posted so far.. Right now loading 168 grain nosler bst, but have thought about berger hunting vld 175 grain.. And i figured 10 to 12 twist but of the three am unsure which would suit me the best.

Re: new 30-06 build, need some input

I went 1/10 on my 30-06. #7 Douglas, stainless. It shoots great with everything from 110gr VMax, up to 240gr Sierra Matchking.

The 22" bbl is plenty to get useful ballistics to way beyond 1000 yards. I'm shooting mostly 208 AMax at 2740 fps with 22.5" bbl. That load is quite accurate to 1500 yards here at 4000-ish feet elevation, and I've pushed it past a mile on occasions.

Here's a pic of my '06. McMillan A2, MK4 16X.

Good googily that 208 AMax at 2740 must kick like a mule! What powder load are you using? I have been planning on working up a heavier bullet because I am shooting 800+ with the gun more often now. MM have you tried any of the Berger hybrids?

Povchrisw, I had mine built with a 22" Krieger 1:10 and have been shooting 175 VLD's at 2800fps. It has more room for juice but very accurate with that load so I stayed there. There is really no need to shoot larger than the 185's for 500 yards IMO but go with a twist that allows you to do so in the future if you decide to stretch it out.

Re: new 30-06 build, need some input

Most of my shooters are around 12#, and I don't use brakes. I would be very leery of repeatedly touching off anything heavier than a 175gr in a .30-'06 shooting prone. For 1000yd, 175gr is enough; and you don't need to stoke it flat out crazy, either. If the .308 can handle that bullet with a 1:12" twist, I have zero doubt the .30-'06 can.

that was a great read. i'm 90% sure im going with 1-11. thanks to every one who posted and helped me out on this one, any more input would be greatly appreciated.

Recoil isn't bad in my rifle. It weighs 16 lbs, and has a Badger Ord "Thruster" brake.

My load with the (moly'd) 208 AMax is 55gr RL17.

I haven't tried the Berger Hybrids.

MM

That load sounds AWFULLY HOT! Checking the Alliant Powder Website and using a 200 gr. SP bullet the max loading of RL-17 is 51 grs. with a velocity of 2552 out of a 24" tube. Now with that being said...I know that there's a difference in the bullet you've listed you're using and the bullet Alliant tested with; bullets with shorter bearing surfaces can be loaded a little hotter and you're also using moly but that load still sounds HOT!!

Re: new 30-06 build, need some input

It's a warm load, but fine in my Rem 700.

I wouldn't recommend it in a Garand.....grin.

Published 30-06 data is always very soft. To put things into the proper perspective for a modern boltgun, consider this. My fireformed brass has 71-72 gr volume. A 300 RSAUM has 74gr volume. That difference in total volume becomes even closer to equal when you consider the RSAUM requires deeper seating if a standard magazine will be used.

Anyways, I appreciate the concern.
