Hi all , I went down the route of the long range 6.5 as an alternative to my 7's . I ran with the 6.5 WSM as I had brass and had some experience with WSM's . Whilst struggling with the 140g Berger's the 139g Scenar's were perfect and soon tight clovering at 3,310 ft/sec .
Reality check for me was what the 6.5 was taking on in wind and I only had to run a 7mm 180g Berger at 2,875 ft/sec to match the 6.5 at 3,300ft/sec with no difference in recoil and longer life in brass and barrel .
As an out and out speed monster I was amazed and my advice to all you other monsters out there is do it with a 7mm .

you guys have forgotten the almighty 6.5 Phag, its just a necked down .284 Phaggut, He shoots the long ones best, but is real hard on throats.
There has been a rumor around for a year or so that Ruger/Hornaday may bring out a 6.5 RCM based on the .300 RCM case. Kind of a modern version of a beltless 6.5 Rem. Mag. Would probably be a fine well balanced 6.5 long range cartridge.
Yeah, also heard that most a using moly now for lube, especially when breaking in and initial chamber reaming.

Very interesting.
If you think about that in combination with what George said in the 6.5 RSAUM thread, it is very intereting indeed.

3100 is speed limit for comps could be pushed harder but then you defeat the purpose of it
If you were pushing the 139gr bullet at 3,310 then you were not running it to its potential. I shot a 6.5 WSM that was running the 140's at 3300 fps. The 130gr bullets should be doing around 3350.
But barrel life is awful at 600 rounds. The 7mm cartridges have nothing on the 6.5 SAUM. As stated by George, "the 7mm does a couple things right, the 6.5 SAUM does them all right".
Go check out the 6.5 SAUM post out. It's got some great info in it. I have shot one since GAP announced the caliber. I really enjoy mine over my 7WSM.
Most comps tell you to keep it under 3200.... not sure about all but that seems to be what the PRS says. Unless they have changed that recently.
So to recap , 3,310 with a 139g is under performing but 3,300 with a 140g is okay ? Hmmmmm
We all have our favourites but 6.5 WSM OR 6.5 saum bug hole grouping with good spreads against a 7mm doing the same then you only have one winner and it ain't the 6.5 .
You only have to look at the F Class to realise that 7's are superior , they went from 6.5x284mm to 7 saums & WSM's .

I have seen a 6.5 STW. Now if you want something that is fast and needs anew barrel as soon as you get a good load worked up then that's the 6.5 round for you. But the problem "I've heard" anyway............. with the 6.5 phag is if you go that route your always going to be working up a load!!!!

You were 9grs above a projectile that was doing over 3400 fps.... and 1gr below the heaviest projectile with an average speed of 10fps faster then the heaviest load. I don't call that great performance.
Anytime you would like to come over and test your theories, I would be happy to provide the range to do so.
If we are talking a caliber that hits all the major factors of being a great all around caliber.... it is NOT the 7WSM at this current time.
Have fun finding its brass right now. I own a couple and have rebarreled more then one to a 6.5 SAUM so far. The 6.5 4S is superior in barrel life, brass life, PSI produced, and it is inherently accurate.
Components are easy to find and the 6.5 projectiles are readily available and on shelves.

You haven't made much sense in the bullet weight v velocity as it seems obvious that the velocities are all on a par from the aspect of 1g of bullet weight seems to be equal to approx 10 ft/sec give or take .
Whilst I would love to take you up on that offer of coming over to shoot , it's not the most realistic of options for me but thank you .

I was one of the GB team that won the 2009 World F Class championship at Bisley UK and I had the good fortune to meet a hero of mine from the US team who shoots 7mm saum , Jim Murphy . I understand your passion for the 6.5 mm saum because I have the same passion for fast heavy bullets in 22 Cals but I know what's top of the tree when it comes to ballistics .

Kurt, same still applies to 6.5 vs 7 even if you shoot a shorter barrel. Anything the 6.5 can do, the 7 can do better and last longer. Smaller bore + same powder volume = more wear. A 6.5WSM/SAUM will have a shorter life than a 7WSM/SAUM, yet have weaker ballistics due to the 7mm BC advantage. The 7mm bullet is the most optimal combo at the moment, if you want to use a .30 cal to best the 7mm, you would be talking 300 Lapua and 230 hyrbids with massive recoil. The 6.5 was king of the hill up to about 6 years ago, still a great caliber though (love the 139 scenars, not the best BC, but groups without effort).
Kurt , 6Dasher is correct , it doesn't matter what your shooting or what we read the 7's are superior and the further you shoot the bigger their advantage !
Almost everything you just typed is incorrect. The 7's will NOT outlast a 6.5
Go read the thread that has been linked numerous times. 7WSM will not go to 4k on the same barrel.
A pointed 140gr Berger Hybrids smokes most of its competition. Why do you think the 6mm 115 DTAC is now irrelevant? The 6mm 105gr Berger Hybrid came along.....
KYS , Ditto , who said anything about going 4000 rounds ? Your quoting Berger , maybe you've heard about Brian Litz ? Look at his figures for 140g 6.5's & 180g 7's & do the maths yourself or get someone to help you !

when looking at the thread on what is most used at the prs and such events why are the 6.5 at the top of the list? Go read the thread on the 6.5. for the application that it was designed for it is about as close to perfect as can be made.
Kurt , it doesn't matter what event your at or plinking at the local range , ballistics on a 7mm are better than a 6.5mm .
...except when they are not.
A pointed 130gr Berger has a verified G1 of .600; combine that with velocity and tell us exactly how a 7mm with similar case capacity & barrel length beats it.
And I'd say few folks put as many rounds downrange as KYS does...
There will always be "new" cartridges many of which are simply old cartridges re worked. Hard to keep up anymore
