For some time now I've been stuck going back and forth between the Aimpoint CompM4S and the Micro T-1 while trying to decide which to mount on my DD M4. I prefer the 2 MOA dot on the M4, but can also appreciate the smaller form factor and outstanding reputation of the T-1.

Now, to compound matters, I see that Aimpoint has released their new H34 Hunter series of red dot sights. It's a little tough to find precise objective lens measurements for the M4 and T-1, but I would assume in each case that they are less than 30mm. The H34, on the other hand, has an objective lens diameter of 39mm. That difference in diameter, if accurate, would give the H34 a viewable area at least 70% larger than either of the other two. Given the parallax free nature of the Aimpoints, this strikes me as a difference that could potentially be a significant advantage in a close quarters engagement. At the same time, common sense would seem to dictate that if the advantage really were that great, then Aimpoint would have figured out a way to incorporate a larger objective lens and field of view into their tactical optics a long time ago.

So what say the experts? Is the H34 worth including in the consideration set, or am I better off making a choice between the original two?

Re: New Aimpoint H34 Hunter model

Have not used the new one, but there is not anything to fix with the originals mentioned. I have a 4s on an AR and love it: no concerns about field of view.

I'm not sure your comparison of objective sizes makes any difference with a red dot. In fact, you may find that the smallest objective (micro) has the best field of view simply because of its size. You use it with both eyes open and unmagnified. So your "field of view" is infinite. you only need to be able to see the red dot through the objective....small is fine.

I think the only way for you to make an intelligent decision is to go somewhere and see them all for yourself: preferably mounted on a rifle.

Re: New Aimpoint H34 Hunter model

What is the price on them? I love Aimpoints, but they are getting rediculous with their prices. $700 for a red dot is getting out of control. And I was actually stupid enough to get the M4s when the $400 CompC3 would have worked just as well.

Since they are red dots and are best used with both eyes open, so I wouldn't worry about the objective sizes. I'd definitely go with the 2MOA dot.

Re: New Aimpoint H34 Hunter model

Thanks, guys. Scooter, I understand what you mean about if ain't broke, etc. And in any sort of a relatively controlled situation, I can see where the practical difference between a red dot sight with a 39mm obj lens versus one with a 29mm obj lens may well be negligible. I was just curious if the larger viewing area of the 39mm obj lens might offer a slight advantage in a more dynamic situation where quick maneuvering causes increased relative movement between the shooter's eye and the center bore axis of the sight. In theory at least, you would think that the less often you completely lose sight of the red dot, the more attention you will have available to focus on the target area.

Paul, if there are any advantages to the H34 sight, I'm afraid it's not going to be in the area of affordability. IIRC, we'll be looking at upwards of $800 for this unit.

Re: New Aimpoint H34 Hunter model

The battery lasts for years, its indestructible. You can bet you life on it. That's worth a premium. If your requirements are not that strict there are plenty of imitations available at much lower prices.

Re: New Aimpoint H34 Hunter model

Haven't seen the H34 sight yet. If you do go with Aimpoint their reliability, battery life, and durability is top notch. EOTechs are a cheaper option and some feel the wider field of view and the peripheral view is better on the EOTech.

Thanks,

the Aimpoint CompC3 is just as good as the higher priced models and it is hundreds of dollars less. For $800, I could have a TA33 ACOG.
