New Atlas Bipod is Great, But Having Some Problems

I received the Atlas from Mile High Shooting last week and as I reported earlier in a post, it is built like a tank but the knurled ring on the legs are rough as hell and the push button the side for folding the legs is so hard I need to use a nylon punch and b-peen hammer to push it in...I have been soaking these two actions in Kroil for the entire weekend and still very tough.

I called BT and talked to a very nice gentleman explaining the issues and he gave me some good direction, but I am still having a problem.

Now I am not bashing the good people, but asking if anyone else had these problems... I know I could send it back, but I need the bipod, I sold a Harris/LaRue to buy this set up...

I have a Atlas that I got in September. My first Atlas,it works fine and I love it.

When I ordered it I was told it would take 3-5 months to get. It only took 2 months.

The next bipod I buy will be an Atlas.

If you can get to the springs, then clip a coil off at a time til you can push it in. Just go slow, its hard putting the coils back. May be a little polishing on the moving parts while you have it apart. Never seen one so I am speculating on it being able to remove parts easily.

You shouldn't need a hammer and punch to push that button in. I have one I purchased a few months back and I had no issues pushing that button in to fold the legs. Something isn't right with you Atlas.

I would really like the opportunity to look at this bipod and correct whatever is wrong with it.

The leg collars should not be "rough as hell" but knurled.

The Leg Position Button or that Position plate might be out of specification.

Soaking it in Kroil is not the solution.

I just received my Atlas last week and the left leg was stuck after pulling and tugging it finally extended and a good bit of fine white sand/material came out...??

the right leg was fine.

The bi pod was new and in a sealed bag..got it from Triad.

I put sniper pixie dust in all the ones I sell. It will fall out the first time you take it to the range

When you said "knurled ring on the legs are rough as hell", did you mean the texture on the surface, or the "action" when you pull on them to adjust the legs?

Not rough from the knurling, thanks for asking, but when you pull back on the knurled ring and collapse the leg, the knurled collar does not slip back into place.....you have to push, pull on the leg to get it to snap closed and lock closed.

I just checked it again and it stuck as hell.....now I am getting a little aggravated....I will take Kasey up on his offer, the only issue is I need a bipod this weekend....we are having a big shoot

Please help me here, I need a bipod this weekend, we have a shoot...can you PM me and see what we can work out....This thing is not right, as I mentioned I sold a Harris/LT set up and added another $120 to get this bipod...

Please see my post above, rough to re-seat the locking collar, not from knurling....that problem has almost gone away, Kroil and Slip 2000 just about fixed that.

I apologize for your experience and I'm trying to make this right for your shoot but as we have lost another day, try this;

In the meantime, regarding the leg positioning, you can examine the Leg position pin, the section that engages the notches and see if there is any material stuck to the mating surface. Those mating parts are heat treated stainless steel and will not "break-in" like the Leg Collar. So if they are out of specification, they need to be replaced.

On the Leg collar, you can extend it fully then while holding the bipod in one hand and the extended outer leg in the other, then rotate just the collar a ton in both directions. I suspect there is a clash of tolerances of the ball hole, ball and collar.

Again, I apologize for your experience and when you can, return it to us and we'll make it the way it should have been in the first place.

Regarding PM's, not trying to be a dick here, but it started public so we'll resolve it public.

Talked to Kasey to day, what a great guy, wonderful to talk to...we developed a plan and if it does not work, Kasey will work on it and make it right...

As I told Kasey, the bipod is built like a tank and I know that we will get past this slight bump...this will not be my last Atlas, I still have many naked rifles that need legs..

As we discussed today:

Just finished working on the bipod like we discussed, hit with Acetone while my son pushed in and out on the button and turned back an forth....used my 15x glass and I could see some very small red/purple debris working its way out....

Took some .001 shim stock I had, cut very thin strip and used this to clean the area....hit with 125 PSIG air, Acetone again, air again and then finished off with Tri-Flow soaking over night.

Looks like this may do it....if not I will send back for you to take a look...

I got mine about 12 months ago and it is the best bipod on the market. It is superior to the Harrises I have owned before. Hope that you get it worked out.

That "red/purple debris" would be the culprit, Loctite 263 used in excess.

I have known Kasey for many years. One of the truly good guys in the industry. Makes great products and stands behind them.

It is alway easier to take a problem directly to manufacture so it can be resolved quickly.
