New barrel for Tikka Master Sporter m595....is this something i can do at home or should it go to a gunsmith?

hi, is it possible to fit a new barrel in a Tikka Master Sporter m595. I would like to go from the .308 to a 6.5 Cr or a 6.5x47Lapua...is this something i can do at home with simple tools or should it go to a gunsmith? Are there prefit barrels available for this rifle?

M595 was a precursor to the t3. Several outfits make prefits for t3, but that doesn't help you determine if barrel tenon is same between the 2. Criterion and pva make tikka prefits that use a barrel nut, if the 595 and t3 share the same action threads and flat breech tenon, id think that would work. Surely lri or someone would know that.

6BR, thanks...hoping to get some more info, really not sure if the tenon and threads are the same. I tried to send an email to Beretta but haven't received a response.

I'd like to see if i can get a handle on what's possible as well as the associated cost...feel funny taking people away from their work.

I can't seem to tolerate the recoil on the .308, not sure why i'm so sensitive to it but i tried a few times to no avail.

I know that the barrel on T3's are very difficult to remove. I have tried to spin two barrels off of T3's and they just did not want to unscrew, I put them in the lathe and made a relief cut just in front of the receiver. With the relief cut made the barrels spin off very easy so they must use a couple of big Finnish boys to torque those suckers down, maybe impact tooling. Since they spin off so nicely after the relief cut made tells me they do not use thread locker when installing the barrels at the factory. I assume your barrel will be difficult to remove, although I have not done one on your model.

Long story short, you will need some significant equipment to get the original barrel off, having a gunsmith remove the barrel would probably be far more cost effective. After the factory barrel is off you can then install barrels with Savage-style nuts if they make them for your flavor of Tikka.

Literally removed a Tikka T3X barrel 2 days ago. My experience was the complete opposite of Wadebrown's. Barrel came off with no real issue and had plenty of anti seize on it. It was a new rifle/unused. (I wonder if they've changed procedure at the factory?)

Like others said, finding out the thread specs on the M595 should be your first step.

A quick search seems to indicate a 1”x 16tpi with a .990 tenon length being common

hope to get this rifle working for me. i think it's a good rifle and i can shoot a 6.5

i'd hate to bugger the basically new .308 barrel as perhaps a family member more capable than myself could use it when i'm gone.

My smith had to do the relief cut to both t3's I had him do. They were stupid tight. The tikka action is fairly thin, so I'd think it would be easy to tweak it by over muscling it.

I have the same rifle in .308 I got back in the 90's. One of the most accurate factory rifles I have shot. If I ever shoot the barrel out, would be nice to know what options exist for the M595.

i like the way rifle looks, feels and cycles.

Mine as well. I have rebarreled three Tikkas and two Sako TRGs. Tikkas took a whack of the palm of my hand on the action wrench and broke free. The Sakos took a couple wraps with a rubber mallet. All were easy.

As far as the m595 goes, I don’t know if anyone chambers pre fits for them.

The simplest answer is yes you can certainly rebarrel that firearm to any caliber that has a 308 standard size case head as far as doing it by yourself there are several things to consider Tikka's traditionally are very tightly torqued and therefore having a barrel Vise that can grip the barrel tight enough to prevent slippage is very important there are various methods for this whether you use a custom fit bushing or some sort of sandpaper, grit powder etc. the important thing is that the barrel does not slip as you are turning the action unlike the T3 which is very lightly built and is both round and Square the 595 is solid and has Square sides so something like a smooth jaw pipe wrench for brass fittings that does not squeeze as you apply pressure probably is your best friend for this application at home if you wish to save the barrel . Avoid inside the action type branches as you have high probability of twisting the wrench or the action rails with the amount of torque you will apply also it is Hard to get a consistent hit if you're going to apply the hammer technique. it's easy enough to experiment with cold or hot as to the best effect on the steel to reduce the grip of the threads, penetrating oil such as kroil oil or similar products maybe effective as well. In regards to pre fits I have a PVA Tikka prefit that is on a 695, the thread pattern is the same between the T3 series and the 595/695 although I believe the tenon length different so make sure that you get the barrel nut version instead of the shoulder version as you can set your headspace appropriately to the action here's a picture of the wrench type that I was talking about hope this helps.

I’m expecting a shouldered prefit to arrive this Wednesday for my Tikka M595 Master Sporter. Coming from PVA, chambered in 6.5 Addiction... Let me qualify that PVA had my action in-hand previously for the first rebarrel from factory 308, so I can’t say that they necessarily sell shouldered prefits for Tikka M595, but worth making a call to ask if you’re interested...

I’ve heard that a Tikka T3 internal action wrench will work on the M595 action, but I sourced a dedicated M595 action wrench from someone who makes and sells them through the Accurate Shooter site. I’ve also read that a universal action wrench or even a 31mm (I think that was the size) open end wrench will work on the flats on the outside of the action for barrel installation/removal.

I know this is a few years old, but as a Tikka 595 fan, it may become useful to someone.
My engineer buddy, made me an action wrench for my 595, my gunsmith has the thread patten and dimensions. He makes me barrels and I spin them on, no fuss no muss. I’ve had mine since 2004, 5 barrels and counting.
