I think its time for another caliber. This will be a paper puncher / steel ringer. NOT a hunter. Looking for a flat shooting, high speed round (3,000fps+) for precision shooting (off bench, bipod)

Which would you opt for? And why?

Or suggest another high speed, low drag flat shooter caiber.

One is a short action rifle cartridge that should push 131gr bullets around 3000fps and kill barrels fairly quick. Thats the cost of performance.
The other is an AR cartridge that maxes out around 90gr bullets going 2700 ish. Should offer plenty of barrel life and cheap shooting. A good cartridge but not comparable to a 25CM at all.

If you’re wanting north of 3k and don’t mind replacing barrels often then go with the 25cm. If you want to push the 3k limit with an 80 gr and keep barrel life go with the Valkyrie. You can push the 88 eldm bullets around the 2900 really easily. Don’t worry about everybody saying it’s an AR cartridge. It runs very very well in a bolt gun. Stretch out your freebore about a .100 over, stretch that C.O.A.L. and you will be shooting it just fine. You should get well into the 5000 rounds or more out of your Valkyrie barrel. I’m not sure how much powder you are putting in the Creedmoor but I’d guess it a bit more than 25.4 grains of h4895. Take those savings into mind.

You have to be pushing the shit out of 88 grain in 224 Valkyrie to be getting 2900 FPS.
Hornady ammo is less than 2700 my loads are right at 2700 running in the middle of the range. I think I might be able to get 2800 out of my 24” barrel but 2900” I think you would have to drop to a 75.

I’m running 2940 to be exact with starline brass and an 88gr bullet. My gun is bored over .100 freebore. Using an M24 Hawk Hill barrel. With an Origin action. I’m on my fifth reloading of my brass also.

I’d like to see the chrono I’ve been through the entire 224 reloading thread and you are the only one getting those types of velocities. Must me an extremely fast barrel I would say it’s the exception not the norm

We have a shoot next week. I will try and put it on the crono and get a pic of it there. Your not the first to have doubts about it. I’ve had many people drop their jaws after learning what it is at a shoot. It may not be the norm for most but for the guy that built this gun I’d say he did a fine job. He will definitely be building not only another one of these for us he will be the only guy to build my sticks for the remainder of the time that I use/play with guns.

Care to share who the builder was? I'm really leaning 224V in a bolt gun.

This is it.

How do you like the origin

I like it, it is nice and smooth. I will say it’s no TL3, but much much better than a Remington 700. Besides I figure it will last for many barrels. Well worth the money.
If there’s a way for you to have Robert build you a rifle you won’t be sorry. He is the best I could find. He won’t just build you a rifle then write you off. It’s a friendship that you will be getting as well. Have a question call him. He is an outstanding person. Has a lifetime of knowledge. I talked with quite a few gun smiths before I settled on Robert. Everyone had something different to say. In talking to them all I learned more and more of what I was expecting out of a rifle and out of a gunsmith. Some wanted to take six or eight months, some wanted to build it but told me it would cost me extra if I wanted them to test fire it and make sure it shot properly., cause there work was sooo good that didn’t need to test fire them. That statement in its self put them on the never build a gun for me list. I don’t care how great of a job you do you better test that thing before you send it out to me. I don’t want something to reach my house then we find an issue with it. Have to send it back and forth for a job you should have done. Some totally didn’t understand the caliber in its self. All those things matter no short cut is worth it. You will always remember the screwup just as much as the perfection.

When I had this goal in mind 6 years ago the 6.5-4s/Saum was what I went with but with a longer freebore.

Big and heavy braked rifle at 24lbs with scope, felt recoil is the same as my 6x47L was at 16 lbs. 140 hybrids at 3175 fps, this is the low node, and I expect decent barrel life. I ran those bullets at 3275 fps for one field course match but some blew up mid air so I went to the lower node, this is a light-ish load in my rifle.

I have a 8.5 twist otherwise I'd try the 147 or 150's and could still get over 3000 fps easily.

Found this rifle and cartridge combo to do quite well at a mile as well.
