Who would you gents suggest using as a pretty much full custom .308 rifle that can be used all over the world (sandbox, mountains, etc. ) I'm pretty hard on my rigs so its going to take a beating since I will be humping a lot of clicks with this rig. Great glass....range finding capability and best barrel that exists should be part of the deal. I'm willing to wait 6-9 months for completetion.....oh, and the finish busy be tough as hell to withstand whipping sand and salt spray. I plan on teaching my son when he is older how to employ this weapon system,

Who do you guys think build the best gear.cim thinking .300 wing mag or .308.

Thanks gents!

Re: New build

I am having a custom rifle built by Walker Custom Rifles. It is basically going to be a M40A3 replica. His turn around time is about 5 to 7 months. I've purchased all of the parts and shipped them to him as he will be doing the complete build and machining. The barrel that will be used in my build will be a Schneider contract barrel which is the same unit used by the USMC. The barrel will be 24 inches from the recoil lug which will be a DD Ross USMC as well. AS far as glass is concerned US Optics in my opinion would be the way to go as well as Schmidt & Bender. Tube size is 34mm. Scope rings that I will be using are the Badger Ordnance USMC M40A3 rings...There are a lot of choices out there, but if you want heavy duty and able to take a beating a custom M40 build will be the way to go. If the USMC can't kill it you won't be able to...Just remember when finished you will be talking about a rifle that will have a weight of 18+ lbs. and it won't be cheap. Here is a list of parts in my build...

Stock - McMillan USMC M40A3 A4 stock
Barrel - Schneider USMC contract barrel blank .308
Trigger - Remington 40X
Action - Remington 700 trued and lug lapped
Bottom Metal - Badger Ordnance USMC DBM system
Scope Rings - Badger Ordnance USMC M40A3
Scope Mount - DD Ross 30 MOA lugged with 8-40 screws
Recoil Lugs - DD Ross USMC thick
Bipod - Harris 6-9 swivel notched leg with pod-loc system
Finish on action and barrel - Cerakote matte black

Who would you use to build the rifle and what kind? Or what rifle would we use to withstand that type of abuse and keep working? If you aren't specifically looking for a custom then go AIAW.
