A friend of mine designed and produced a highly effective muzzle brake for .50cal use and then scaled the design down to smaller calibers. I still have two of them and they are the most effective, least noisy, (to the shooter) brakes I've used to date.

When tested on my 300winmag with a 208gr bullet it went from 35ft-lbs of recoil with no brake, to 10 with the brake. He put some sort mathematical equation to it and determined it was 98% effective at eliminating recoil from gasses exiting the muzzle.

More to the point, I told him he should try for a patent and sell them. He said there wasn't much point in going through the trouble to obtain a patent only to have someone copy it and change one minor detail to get around the patent. Indeed, all is fair in love and war.

When he applies, China will copy it and mass produce it before his patent is approved. They are super efficient at that process

Jesus christ, I actually agree with you for once.

I understand free market competition, but it definitely discourages innovation when one does the R&D, prototyping, product manufacturing ... then have it copied and pasted by the competition. Its nearly expected when a company like Hornady fucks Henderson on the trimmers, but feels more brutal when small companies do it to each other.

As an aside, I dont have a Chad - so Im not speaking from a place of emotion - just looking at this pragmatically.

But without the protections of a patents, investments are risks of exactly this happening. Innovators invest capital to develop a new innovation, then after you spend all you have and finally go to market A slime ball like Preece steels the IP and makes a copy and undercuts your market and you are done financially. Sure the markets rule but without the patent protections why invest in anything new.

No dog in this fight but curious what the benefit is to welding the separate sections together vs just machining the whole brake like others do? Is it a cost thing or the ability machine each section like the baffle of a can (ie put angle on the back side of the baffle/port)?

Makes sense. I imagine then that the future of brakes is in additive manufacturing, like with cans. Pretty cool stuff.

I use the CHAD. It is the most effective brake I have ever used.

The Preece may also work well, but it looks like a cut-and-paste of the CHAD. I reserve judgment until more is known about it.

not new but a shit thing to do to another small company. China copying shit is one thing but a former dealer of the Chad and someone that’s very involved in the sport as a smith and competitor. Shit thing to do. Definitely won’t send anymore business his way.
I definitely don’t recommend Hornady to anyone after the trimmer shit. I mean their bullets were average at best outside of the ATips anyway, but that put the nail in the coffin for me with them.

ETA: I was at K&M couple years ago when everyone raised holy hell about Leofoto putting out a mini plate pro that pretty much exactly copied Dave at gray ops plate. I literally had a very well respected high ranking shooter in my squad go put his Leo tripod in the car and grab his RRS mid stage the moment the plate was announced that morning. Leofoto then almost immediately put out an apology and withdrew the plate all together. Hope the community does the same thing here.

I do not use any of those products. Yes I will admit I understand innovation but to steal like the above brands, I avoid them like the plague.

And a 1000 different suppressors that are literally just laser welded baffle stacks

I see no one has mentioned the JP Enterprises John Paul Signature brake. It would appear Without Warning wasn’t the only company developing and making brakes by welding individual baffles. How, exactly, is that unique?

Its not unique one bit, most welded suppressors are done this way.

These two brakes look so fn dissimilar side by side, it's kind of a joke to call it a clone.

Looking closer it has very little in common other than the shape and size and welding. The CHAD has specific geometry and angled ports that I would hypothesize are a big reason they shoot so well. The preece version looks like a shitty attempt to copy it or just using the same "baffle" welding style. I doubt it shoots as well based on port angles alone. Even temu would get the copy closer than that if that was the intent.

I'm seeing A LOT of Chad brakes on the line at the match this weekend. Even the new gay tiger one, which looks badass in the sunlight.
