New duty weapon, I want your suggestions

Okay I'm in a really weird situation.

I recently received word from my company that my duty weapon was no longer approved for duty carry due to its magazine capacity. They gave me two choices, either modify my firearm to accept low capacity magazines or get a new weapon.

My current duty gun is a H&K USP with a jet funnel and I have no intention of removing the jet funnel to accommodate low capacity magazines. So I am left with only one option, to buy a new duty weapon.

This is where I would like some help, I want something screams "you should have let me carry my H&K." The limitations are that it has to be DAO or DA/SA, no revolvers allowed and the barrel length has to be between 3 and 5.5 inches, oh and sadly no hot calibers like 357 Sig or 10MM. No limitations on color thankfully so what ever I end up getting it will most likely get painted some weird and obnoxious color.

Alright, let the crazy ideas start.

If your mandated to go down in your Magazine capacity . Fill it-up the space with some heavy Big Boys -- .45acp & w/8 in the Mag .
And if you only get 2 choices . either ( DA/SA or DAO ) . I say go with the smoothest Pulling, DAO out there manufactured .
You need Top mechanical Reliability with quality workmanship for a working carry.

I wouldn't get to crazy in case you need to use it. But, a 45acp FN in play toy orange would make a statement... Or better yet just have the mags done so you can come back at the questions with "it’s a safety mag"... have some custom old soviet hammer and sickle base plates made accented in black.

That entire situation sounds ridiculous. However any excuse to buy new stuff. That Sig 220 would be terrific, or if you like faster rounds the 229. No revolvers is a bummer because I'd love to show up for work with a S&W Model 29 like Dirty Harry.

I say that you should get a 1911 in the brightest finish possible, with an upright middle finger scrimshawed into the grip. That way every time you walk around your company, you're letting them know exactly how you feel.

Im assuming the request is due to Colorados new law restricting mag capacity on new magazines at 15rds or less, and your jet funnel USP is a bit over yes? Glock 21? Glock 22? Glock 19? Glock 30? All at 15 or under. Assuming they consider the glock safe action a DAO. Forget about the paint and move on, legal dept told them to do it, and you will not be disadvantaged with any of the tools mentioned.

How about a tt-33 tokarev, I see them (in Canada) for $190 (surplus, $250 for unissued/new zastava) ALL the time and the ammo is ~200 for 2880 rounds! And they're actually not bad for plinking as they are reliable/easy to maintain. That would most definitely make a point!

HELL YEAH!!! This is exactly what I was going to advise. If you have the room on your belt run like 6 mags on your belt, if you can get the slanted mag pouches like they use in 3 gun that would be even cooler.

Hmm, in playing around with my HK USPs with jet funnels, I was able to mill down the plastic base plate to allow the std mags to fit up in the funnel. That would seem to accomodate the letter of the "request" by your company.

The people that came up with this policy know nothing about guns and are insisting that the jet funnel be removed, they dislike that part just as much as the 16 round mags. I'd hate to spend the time and money only to have them tell me it's not good enough.

I would get a Mk23 but the barrel length disqualifies it for carry and I'm not willing to chop off the tip of the barrel on one of those guns.

Right now I'm torn between swallowing my pride and using the idea of a pseudo 3 gun rig with low cap mags and a FNH FNX 45 tactical in FDE as that would stand out like a sore thumb where I work.

kraigWY, I'd love to carry a revolver but as of last year my company said no more revolvers, those that already carry them are grandfathered in but I missed the boat on that one.

What a load of crap over mags that are legal to possess as they are grandfathered and only one freakin round over the limit. Total BS but the policy makers will defend it to the last as the decision represents their perceived value to the organization you work for. My guess is the very thing that you like about your rig, that it is semi custom and the customization makes it yours, is the very thing that the policy makers dislike. The crux of the matter is the the policy makers want you with a standard, generic, firearm. My guess is that you are going to buy another USP and run 13 rd mags. It sucks but there are worse fates than a spare gun and mags in the safe. Or the unthinkable- remove the jet funnel- run 13s- and the jet funnel and 16s go in the safe. There are worse fates than a jet funnel and a bunch of 16s in the safe. Whatever your choice get it incorporated in your drills so you are efficient with the changes in the tool, thats what is important. Get this behind you. Deal with this BS by training harder.

I prolly wouldn't do anything to spite my Employer, but that's just me. However, if you do like your job and wanna keep it, and continue to live in an occupied state, I'd use a G22 with 15+1 180gr Bonded Ranger/HST/Gold Dot.

I'd also have a Full Stipling job done, as well as have a Beaver Tail blended in, and have the slide milled and install an RMR. That'll get their attention, and be highly affective as well

Any current manufacture 'issue' 1911 45. It's innocuous enough, can take a 7 - 10rd mag, and current 'issue type' models function quite reliably after initial break in.
Most GI Issue style 45's are less than $700 which makes them a prime candidate for anyone who wants a low capacity pistol with the ability to stop a fight with two rounds or less

I'm not sure if they just made it in limited numbers or they just didn't import it for long, but unless I didn't shake out all the cobwebs this morning it does exist. That said, I'm willing to bet the guy you quoted doesn't know that either and simply made an error about the standard SA nature of Hi Powers.

I stand corrected. For some reason I remembered the BDA as being a pre-Sauer-Sohn large-frame "SIG" marketed through Browning. Still, why would you want to run a Hi-Power in double-action first or only mode other than to calm nervous lawyers?

If the OP has to have it DAO or DA/SA, I say go with the DA/SA, learn to shoot it (sorry, most DAO triggers seem to be packed with beach sand and butterscotch at the factory), and think about something retro like a well-maintained SIG P-225.

To answer a couple questions I work for a private security company that does government, corporate, aviation and healthcare security. I don't want to list the name of the company as this is an active situation, I highly doubt that anybody that works there is a member of this forum and would read this but better safe than sorry.

Yes Glock pistols are allowed but I just can't get used to the safety in the trigger, it really starts to bother and cause a small amount of pain in the trigger finger after not much more than 50 or so rounds.

And last but not least modifying the mags in some way to hold 15 or less rounds is a no go.

edit: the no SA thing really broke my spirit when I started with the company, I already have a couple 1911's that would be awesome to carry. The Para LDA made it on to the approved roster about 1 year ago but a female officer showed up with one at a qualification a while back but was told the trigger pull was too light and it needed to be modified before she could carry it. She ended up using a Glock because she was not interested in modifying the Para.

Another edit: I honestly never knew about the Browning BDA, now I just need to find one and have it nickle plated, that would be pretty cool.

Sig P220 - great pistol! 2nd choice G21. They work, go bang every time and its 13+1 of .45ACP. I hear what you are saying on the Glock triggers, but it is something that can be overcome with training. 3rd choice - A nice 1911 of your choice. One can get 10 round mags and still feel adequate. Oops, just saw the NO GO on S/A pistols. FWIW, I carry a .40 cal Sig P226 with 3 spare mags on the belt, one on my vest. I have a couple more in my duty bag as well as a few spares in my go bag in the trunk with my AR mags. Duty mags are 12 rounder's. I'm lucky in that I get to use a Sig with the single action. If I was you I would seriously look at the Sig and Glock I mentioned. Both are decent choices with one having a trigger that would be more to your liking. The other, slightly higher capacity. Whatever your choice is, get a number of spare mags to go with the gun.
