I'm an old (nearly 70), out of practice varmint hunter looking to get back in the game now that I'm retired. Past experience was mostly hunting groundhogs at 200-450 yards with an occasional opportunity at +600 (most of which were misses). I was shooting a Mark V .257 Weatherby, 26" barrel, Leupold 10X AO fixed power scope. I figured that if I was going to try it again I needed a better rifle, so I bought a Savage 12LRPV in 6mm Norma BR and an Athlon Argos BTR Gen2 6-24x50 scope. My shop area is unheated and poorly lit, so I have yet to get the rifle put together ... and it's been so long, I don't have rifle primers or powder. In the meantime I'll read here and try to learn how to do this the right way this time.

Thanks for making this site available!

Welcome from eastern kentucky.

I've had several savage 6BRs and have had great luck with all of them. Only reason I got rid of the first couple I had was finding a couple of the model 12 palma takeoff stocks to do savage precision target action builds with aftermarket 6BR barrels. Want to say I started with an argos btr (first gen) on the one I shoot (the one for my son has an area on it) and have had good enough experience with it I haven't upgraded it. Not too familiar with the gen 2 but if it is like the first gen, it should get the job done. Sure there are more refined scopes but for the price it is a fine scope in my opinion.

As for the primers and powders, I'm glad when I put a rifle together buy enough reloading supplies to shoot out the barrel (after finding load for the rifle) so haven't had to look for anything for a long time, as I have less time now than I used to for shooting, but hearing everyone's experiences lately sounds horrible for the reloader community.

Anywho, welcome aboard.

Thanks for the encouraging post!

Back when I was hunting I also had a Savage 112-V, and had long wished for a version of that rifle that was right handed/left eject and in a heavier caliber. I didn't want another .22-250 because in fairly steep rolling country (back then it was Thompson's Valley near Tazewell VA, now it's Sullivan and Washington counties in TN), at longer ranges you may be shooting across winds in different directions. With the .224 pill, it was often nearly impossible to dope the wind well enough to make a long shot, thus my changing to the somewhat less accurate .257. The 112-V was an accurate rifle that would shoot 1/2 MOA or better if I did my part, but that's worthless if your dope is wrong. I'm still a big Savage fan despite them finally realizing what their rifles are worth and raising the price accordingly.

I'd gotten a flyer from Sportsman Guide showing that they now carried more firearms. When I went to the website I found the 6BR, I don't know how long Savage has offered it because I gave up many years ago on getting a .243 or .257 in the rifle I wanted from them. SG was about the last place I would have thought to look for one. The Athlon appealed to me because I like the reticle, that's why it won out over a mid-range priced Vortex. It's an MOA scope because I spent 7 years as a surveyor, and while I may eventually be able to guess in degrees/inches again, I have no idea what an MRAD looks like in the wild although I like the concept. I'll stay pretty busy (when I can make ammo) learning how to properly use the reticle on the Athlon in the field.

Greetings from Arkansas! "Upper East TN"? Love the Tellico Plains area and thoroughly enjoyed driving the Cherohala Skyway into Bryson City. Mind you that was back in the late 90's before the place got ate up with people.
