Joined the site to lurk for a bit. I'm a hunter and used to fish a lot more than I do now, but still love fly fishing. I've done a few years in the Marine Corps and I'm looking to do some shooting at longer ranges than I have in the past. A range somewhat local goes out to 600, but there's nothing within 2 hours that goes beyond that and only a handful of ranges that go out to 1k in the state.

I'll be doing a lot more reading than posting as I'm looking to get into reloading and there seems to be more than enough information here on shooting and reloading to keep me busy for a while.

Re: New from Lancaster, Pa

I feel your pain trying to find long local ranges in PA. 600 is pretty good to have semi local though. Most the 1k ranges in the state are closer to the western side. And of course I am far east, just a mile or so from the Delaware river. But, there are plenty of long range tactical shoots that are close enough to drive to. Keep an eye on the comps thread, they fill up pretty quick. My in-laws live in Oxford out near you. Out there I keep trying to find a farmer willing to allow some long range shooting. No such luck yet.

I'm working on finding hunting properties. I've got some things in the works in Chester County for archery, but not much down here for rifle. I hunted with a couple of my Marines this year in the northern part of 5-C.

I'm waiting on a quote for a rifle from On Target Gun Shop in Frackville. I'm hoping to meet some other shooters in the area as the competition/match shooting is new to me. Longest I've shot is the Table 1 rifle qualification for the Marine Corps.

Re: New from Lancaster, Pa

I'm in Northeast PA, Luzurne County and there's not really any ranges that I know of in the area to shoot beyond 300.

My buddy and I usually go out to the old coal stripping pits to shoot and he said he found us a place to shoot ~500 but we'll see.

I used to live near York, PA.

New Holland Rifle/Pistol club- Steel and paper out to 600 (talks about going out to a grand in a year or two). Members only club- Ranges closed this week and next for construction to re-do the berms.

I'm going to join there eventually. Just had our second child a few weeks ago and it's easier on my wife when I'm not gone more than I have to be.

I just got my membership card to Penn Dutch. Only goes out to 400, but it's better than most clubs that are limited to 100-200 yards in the area.

Got permission to hunt a farm that shares a property line with state game lands that has room to shoot over 1000. Also found a spot practically within walking distance to bow hunt.

I'm heading to the groundhog match at Hopewell Fish and Game on Sunday.

Picked up an RCBS reloading system and a Remington Model Seven in .260. It's only a three shot group from working up a load, but it put a group of 129 gr SSTs into 0.174" center to center. I loaded a bunch up for this match on Sunday and I'm heading to Penn Dutch to see how they do in larger numbers at 300 and 400.

It's definitely not a long range rifle, but it's certainly better than the .30-30 lever gun I'm used to hunting with while crawling through the thick stuff in PA. Under 8 lbs scoped, it's still very nice for walking around.
