I just received my brand new M40A5 from GA Precision about 6 months earlier than expected. After mounting my optics and before my first range trip, I checked the bullet seating depth to get a good idea how long to seat my hand loads. Then I checked it again. And again. And about 20 more times.

I keep coming up with a max COAL of 2.725" for the 175 grain SMK to be right on the lands (as opposed to my GA Precision Harbinger that comes out to 2.850"). Both FGMM and Black Hills 175 grain factory ammo are too long to chamber unless you muscle the bolt, and too long to eject without pulling the bullet out of the brass and leaving in the barrel and spilling powder everywhere.

Is it possible that this rifle was chambered in Palma, or is this something that will break in if I set the bullets deeper and get a few hundred rounds in the barrel? I can't imagine that highly compressing a load to get the correct depth is the way to go, let alone the fact that I can't shoot factory ammo.

Has anyone seen anything like this before and can it be fixed or does it need to be rebarreled?

No it shouldn't have to break in. If you have to muscle factory ammo, call them and ship it back. I'm sure they will have no problem fixing it. You paid too much money for it not to be correct.

The gang at GA Precision showed themselves to be the best in the business. The gun was indeed chambered with a reamer that was not correctly dimensioned, but they corrected their error and the new COAL is 2.825" at the lands.

The gun shoots everything I throw at it with a 175 grain bullet and even my worst groups are 1/2". It makes no difference whether it's Varget or 4064 (or even what the powder charge is). Pick a muzzle velocity and go shooting!

Thanks to Mark Hall and George for dealing with this so promptly and making the rifle PERFECT.

NO surprise there at all, good to hear. We need pics of the gun though :)

Time at the range with my spotter. His wind calls were hard to distinguish from his squirrel spottings. I'm convinced this rifle will shoot 1/2" even if I cram some stones from the gun club's driveway down the barrel. Thanks GA Precision! You guys are great to deal with, and the rifle showed up about 4 months early.
