New guy here, Savage 10 .308

Good Afternoon Gents,

Every time I hit google regarding rifles/long range shooting I end up on threads from this forum so I figured I'd create an account. I am more of a recreational shooter, not competing...yet. I got into "long-ish" range shooting about a year and a half ago. I bought a 20" savage 10 FCP and put it in an XLR chassis. For my first bolt action, I am extremely impressed with it's capabilities for the relative low amount of money I've spent on it. If I'm doing my part I can get sub 0.5moa out of it. When it was in the accu-stock I got it out to 1,000 yards for my first time ever which was very enjoyable. I shoot with a Gemtech tracker on it which I also really enjoy.

I look forward to learning a lot more here, and possibly getting competitive down the road. I'll try and post some pictures.

But just an FYI -- the "If I'm doing my part" probably is best left out as with "all day long".. not exactly sure why but it seems to earn a bit of ribbing you might not want.

off to a good start here, thanks? that doesn't make sense. is it not accepted that you can have a very accurate rifle but if you shoot like crap then you'll get crap groups? I guess I should have said "my rifle is capable of sub 0.5 MOA?" I also don't want to come off cocky and bragging because I am relatively new to this and I know I have tons to learn and get better at.

√ You are all good - was not in anyway busting chops -- Apologies, if it at all seemed that way. I was trying to be helpful..

You are shooting very good. Personally, I would not worry about your ability to make a group. If this site interested someone, then most-likely, they can shoot a decent group. Oh and ALL of us can shoot some bad ones and we all miss.. The fun is in trying to miss less, or challenging ourselves in conditions/times that make shooting a bit harder.

I would not be to worried about not knowing stuff. If we are honest, all of us are always learning.. I maybe be how the stage got in our head or how the wind kicked our but on a 22LR or how to hide new toys from our wives

I think this is called the "Hide" because thats what most of us have to do with our toys.. Na hun, I had that rifle a really long time

Thank you for the welcome. And yes, I am very fortunate to have a place in my area to shoot out to 1k. It is our buddies farm, we can only shoot on it certain times of the year but it is a blast. We have learned a lot shooting there! and it is 15 minutes from my work and 45 min from my house. They've been trying to sell it for a few years but no one has bought it, which is good for us!

Good question about upgrades/future rifle. As far as my bolt action....I'm not really sure honestly. I considered swapping the barrel to a 6.5c but it will take me forever to burn up that .308. I'd probably just end up putting together something a little more "custom" by then. I want to go watch and then possibly participate in a local PRS match sometime this year then after shooting in those matches let that tell me what I think I need. But for now, it's perfectly capable for me. I've been running 168g Amax/BTHP hornady in my savage with good results. That gun hates all federal ammo I've tried...the bolt sticks shut after firing. I've tried multiple lots and it happens every single time. It loves the hornady though.

I am currently putting together a .222v gas gun that's hogging my attention and money right now. I have everything just waiting for 24" 1:6.5 bison armory barrel to arrive.

Oh, I forgot to mention. As far as optics, that vortex viper HS-T is okay but I will end up upgrading at some point. I started my own company where I offer rentals for scopes and AR upper receivers so I have a stock of different scopes that I can play around with. A big fan of these Athlon scopes at the moment.

Yes, with a bit of pressure the BA's extractor and chamber combination are a fairly known issue. I had an extra 338BA I used to loan when buddies shot ELR with us. It shot very well, I just became tired of using a cleaning rod inserted down the muzzle on a gun I loaned out. It happened with Hornady brass hand loaded too, they just do NOT like hot loads. Full length resized and it was even worse. I changed all I could, bolt head, extractors, detents.. it got a tiny bit better, but could not run anything like my other 338s.

You have it shooting so well, maybe do the PRS or NRL a couple of times as you suggest. You may decide you love it and want to go an entirely different route, if you are tempted to run hotter loads.

Yeah I think me and a buddy are going to take the ride down to one of the monthly PRS matches and spectate and get the hang of how it flows and works. Then possibly enter. I am weird and I don't want to show up to compete and have no clue how the whole process works.

Would there be a way to polish the chamber somehow? Give it a tiny bit more "room"?
