I just bought my first bolt action rifle. I bought a Savage PC10 in .223 with a 1/9 twist in a 20 inch barrell, I also bought a Vortex Viper 4-16-44 Scope with BDC reticle. I don't have much experience shooting. I built an AR-15 and shot about 100 rounds through it and that is my experience with shooting rifles I then sold the AR-15 to buy a bolt action rifle and here it is. This is the first day I got it. I just wanted to start a thread to track my progress with precision shooting.

Then I did some research on here and ended up with this scope Vortex Viper VHS-4305, it's a 4-16 with a 44 objective and a BDC reticle.

I just got out to the range yesterday, I had about 100 rounds of cheap 55grain ammo from my AR-15 and I also bought some Black Hills 69gr match ammo and took that with me as well. I had it bore sighted at Cabela's after I bought the scope and the guy putting it on didnt use any of the windage adjustments on the scope mounts, as I was getting close to where I needed to be to get it sighted in I ran out of windage clicks. I then counted the clicks on the windage and turret and reset it in the middle. I took the bolt out of the gun went back out the 50 yard mark and boresighted it with by looking through the barrell and put the bolt back in and was only about 2 inches to the left of my target and it didn't take to much to zero it after that. I didn't break it in, I just went to shooting it. I shot about 140 rounds.

Anyways this was my best 5 shot group with 55gr ammo at 100 yards which is as far as I could shoot at this range. The grouping was not very good and I don't want to just blame it on the ammo. I don't think I was being very steady either.

Here is my best grouping at 100 yds with 69gr Black Hills Ammo. That was my first 5 shot group with this ammo, I had to adjust it up a little bit but other than that it was pretty close,

I loved it and it was a lot of fun, I will enjoy going to the range and shooting as much as I can. I am very happy with the Vortex scope that I bought and it was a middle of the line Vortex about $500.00. I also ordered a mat, better cheek rest to raise the comb(if that's the correct term) and some more ammo last night. I ordered about 8 different boxes of different weights of match grade ammo from different manufacturers to see if I can find one my rifle likes the most. I am very pleased with the rifle and my shooting for being my first time. I will also be practicing by dry firing it as much as I can at my house. If anyone has any suggestions on ammo let me know please.
