Disclaimer: I know that these aren't 5-shot groups. I'm still learning all the rules you guys have. I only had 2 boxes of ammo and this was my first time shooting a brand new rifle. I didn't have the luxury of 5-shot groups this time. Next time I'll go for 5-shot groups.
I got this rifle (DPMS LRT-SASS) a few weeks ago and just got to the range today to shoot it. For those who care, the scope is a 6-24x50 Vortext Viper PST. I have never owned a semi-auto, so I was concerned if I could make the transition. I'm just a guy who likes guns and has been shooting deer rifles for about 17 years....not military or law enforcement. Today I was shooting Federal 168gr Sierra Match Ammo I bought from a gun show a couple of weeks ago.
After a few rounds getting the gun sighted in, this was my first 3-round group from 100 yards:
The guy who owns the range asked if I wanted to try 300 yards. The farthest I had ever shot before was 200 yards, so I was reluctant....mainly because I didn't want to screw up in front of the other guys. We did the math, shot a group, and royally screwed up. Shot very high at 300. We realized we tripled the mil adjustment, so we readjusted the scope (now 1.6 mils) and I shot this group (no windage change):
Then I was asked if I wanted to try 500. I think this was because the other guys never shoot under 500. I made another adjustment to the scope (3.7 mils, still no windage as there was virtually no wind today). I shot 3. Another guy wanted to shoot my rifle, so he shot 3 at one of the other targets and realized my scope was really out of focus (parallax??) so he adjusted it. I looked through the scope after he shot and saw how much clearer it was (I thought that the lack of clarity was just the mirage you had to deal with at high magnification and 500 yards....I didn't know the scope was out of focus). Because I was so much happier with the clarity of the scope after the adjustment I decided to shoot another 3-rounds at my same target (I wasn't expecting much to be honest). Here is the group we found when we went to the target:
It is hard to tell exactly which 6 are mine because there are 8 holes. The guys told me some of the pasties had fallen off the target. At any rate it is what it is. At best it is a fantastic group. At worst, it is still pretty okay. This was my first long range (long range to me at least) shooting with my friends. In times past I was just an onlooker who shot my friends' guns at 100 yards.
Needless to say I'm very pleased that the gun did what others said it could/would. I'm hoping I will only get better and more comfortable with it. I got this gun because I had heard they were accurate. This confirmed it for me.
