Hey all, I'm a new guy looking to have a little bit of help in choosing which optic to buy for a rifle that I have coming in. The rifle is a ptr 91f with the intentions of being used in a dmr type roll. The intended ranges are 100-700 maybe even with the occasional 800 thrown in for kicks and giggles.

So far for optics I have to the list
1. SWFA SS 3-15x42 MRAD reticle
2. Swarovski Z3 3-10x42 BRX reticle
3 Steiner 2.5-10x42 S-1 reticle

I would greatly appreciate any in put you guys have to give on these scopes and if you have any other suggestions I'm all eyes/ears.

P.S. This will be my first scope I've ever owned, it's been nothing but iron sights till now.

Thank you all in advance

Welcome to the Hide, congrats on gettin a new stick too. Optics depend on budget and the ones you listed retail value is broad. but from tons of threads on this site SWFA is popular I have a new SWFA fixed 12 going on a Savage 10 of mine due in UPS tomorrow. SWFA fixed 10x are very popular for the ranges you listed and if you don't need the 3-15 power then a 10x HD would prolly be extremely good . Have to post some pics once you get your new setup complete best of luck bro.

DEW,

You kind of all over the place with your scope choice: You've got two 30MM tubes, one 1" tubed scope, one scope with FPP (first focal plane), two with SFP (second focal plane), one with MIL reticle and MIL adjustments, two with MOA adjustment, some kind of reticle that might measure in MILS, or MOA or even Cubits, for all I know cause I could find little information on how either the BRX or the S-1 reticles subtend; and finally you have one scope with external adjustable turrets, and two that don't.

I'm not going to tell you what scope you should buy, but given your price range here are the scopes I recommend you at least look at:

All Have 30mm Tubes, all Have MIL/MIL adjustments in external adjustable turrets

SWFA SS 3-9x42mm FFP MIL/MIL
SWFA SS 3-15x42 FFP MIL/MIL
Vortex PST 2.5-10x32mm FFP MIL/MIL, Illuminated, Zero Stop
Leupold 3-9x40mm VX-R Patrol SFP MIL/MIL Illuminated
Bushnell Elite Tactical 3-12x44mm FFP MIL/MIL available as both Illuminated or non-Illuminated for less $

All those scope range in price from $599. to $899. They are are all from makers with good reputations for making a quality scope and good to excellent service. Not that Steiner or Swaro make junk for scopes, they make excellent scopes BTW. But the ones I recommended all have similar features so your comparing apples to apples.

Good luck

NF 2.5-10, USO ST-10 or MR-10, Steiner would be kickass, or Premier 3-15, I'm pretty sure vortex make something in that mag range as well. if you want to stay on the cheaper side check out Bushnell

I've never personally been behind USO glass but I've never heard anything bad about it. I have been behind the rest and will say that they are all great quality glass, great knobs, and whatever else you may be looking for.

I would ask you this:
Which system do you intend on using? Mil or MOA
What is your knowledge of the intended system?
How much magnification do you expect to need?
Having never been behind an optic I would also suggest try to get your hands on one of the options your interested if not all of them and see what you like and what you don't.

A lot of experience shooters can make solid hits on MOA (1" at 100, 3" at 300, and so on) sized targets at range with pretty low magnification.

Read up brother, and good luck. Those scope you have listed are some good stuff too btw.

The day that I can afford to put some of that glass on a rifle will be the day that I either get money from someone else's life insurance or the lottery god's decided to do me a small favor with my next powerball ticket.:D

as for system of use, I like the idea of the mil over the moa, it just seems to me that I can do the math a tad bit faster. as for the mag level I really don't need anything above 10 seeming how my ranges usually aren't going to be surpassing the 800yard arena, and I still have great eye sight. As for knowledge of the system I have very little, but I like to believe I'm a fast learner.

Read sir READ lol I've said this time and time again this sight literately has a metric shit ton of information.

As for the affording some for the aforementioned I would just keep your eye out. the Swar is around 850$ on a quick google price check, you could probably pick up one of the one up there for about a grand.... maybe! lol

Optics is one thing that I learned very quick the ole' saying you will see time and time again on here applies extremely well too. Buy once, Cry once! Best of luck and let us know what you end up getting.

I seem to remember hearing something about them being able to guide your bullet to the target by a strong magnetic pulse/ wave, all you need to do is use a bullet with a steel case and a bi metal jacket and you're set... Tula ammo works here I come

Oh I see that the new dual mil on mil checker EXLR reticles are finally out, id go with that over that other stuff. I know this took years to calibrate but I hear the armys in the Balkans have vetted it with great results. Finally I like the micro tangental milling laser etching, shoot fleas off a dog with that.

Yeah, I guess I would do that if I didn't have any skilz, but I can shoot the mites off the dog's flea's!
