hey everyone, im new here. good to be here.

im about to start piecing together an ar10 and im by no means a pro. pretty new to the ars anyways. i do have a dpms ap4 223. i love it and it has convinced me that i want a long range ar. ive decided to go with the 308 and would like to get out to 600 yards. now my question is, where is the best place to buy parts? ive been looking on gunbroker and have found most of what i need. there seems to be an abundance of armalite. i do know that armalite is only compatible with noveske and aero precision. do i want to go that route, or look for dpms parts? also, about the uppers. can i piece together an upper, or do they only come complete? any and all advice would be totally appreciated.

thanks

Re: new here/first ar10 build

There is a ballistic chart out where the military did a long range comparision between the 6.5, 6.8, 7.62 nato .300 win mag, etc.. Showed me something about the 6.5 Grendel. It did not address accuracy which is the real deal. Does not matter it bucks wind or less drop if it will not be consistantly accurate away out. I printed it off and will try to find the source if someone else does not know it. 'Guns' mag. had an aricle about up gunning the AR in the last couple of months that is worth looking up. Getting the right mix of parts to manage pressure seems critical. I have been toying with getting an AR other than .223 for a year now and just can't decide if it is the right thing to do with that action. It is what it is, the good and the bad, and probably should be real careful in trying to make it something it's not. Explore getting away from a completly gas system if anyone is making 308's in the latest scheme. Good luck.

Re: new here/first ar10 build

Really partial to .308, Armalite in particular. They don't seem to have much in the way of parts available for a build. If I'm not mistaken, DPMS uppers will not mate with Armalite in .308, so what's the recommedation for building an upper for an Armalite Lower?

Re: new here/first ar10 build

If your going to look at the 6.5 Grendal, why not look at other 6.5 cartridges as well? Personally, I would go with a .260Remington and utilize the 139scenars.

Check out Iron Ridge Arms. 7075 recievers, tight tolerances, awesome finish. What is there not to like?

IMO, building one is extremely expensive. There are lots of manufacturers that are making .308 parts. I built a custom and really don't even want to add the cost up bc I know I will freak out...

Depends on what you want to do. Certain things can get expensive, or just not be available options. For instance, I wanted a MATEN with ambi-mag release, AAC 51T brake, NiB or Chromed BCG, CTR stock, BAD-Cass ambi safety, Geissele trigger, etc... Waiting on a build would have taken awhile and cost me a fair bit. Instead, I waited a long while, and slowly hunted down parts when they were on sale or being offered at a discount, used or etc...

In the end, I saved a little bit of money (not any tremendous amount), but I did get the exact gun that I wanted, without having to pay for default parts that would end up being taken off and thrown in a box because resale value wasn't worth it. I did add up the cost (I kept a spreadsheet totalling all my expenses), and the build will finish out at about $2600, +/-.

Probably plus rather than minus, but like I said, I will have exactly the gun I wanted.
