hi i'm new on here live in australia i have shot out to 800yrd with moderate success but would like to start setting my sight to the mile mark .

It sounds like a really nice rifle. I'm not sure of the exchange rate from AUS to US, but I think that's around ~$6700 US.

Youve shot out to 800yds, but now you want to jump to a mile? That's a big jump. You say you've shot 800yds with "moderate" success? I'd master my shooting inside the 1000yd line and then work my way out. Being "Good" inside 1000yds alot more than just shooting prone off a bipod and a rear bag off a concrete slab. Challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone. Do some positional shooting. Shoot off a pack with no rear bag. Shoot from cover and uneven surfaces.

It's a GAP, you CANNOT go wrong if it is genuine. Get in touch with George and he will be able to tell you when it was built, who put it together, all that stuff. He may even have a test target, but I don't know about that, however, it's worth asking.

I know it's a lot of money, but "Buy once, cry once"

.338LM should comfortably take you out to 1500m. But if your sucess at 800 was "moderate", why not sign up for the on-line training? Guaranteed to learn something you didn't know.

trevor300sm i had a custom f class 223wssm built years ago to shoot 1000yrd
on wind free or consistant wind day i could get 1 moa. with 90grn amax projectiles but if the wind was not consistant it was all over.
so i put it on the back burner for a while to save up for a new toy in the 308 338 cal .
iam leaning toward 338lap mag mainly for the longer legs it has past the 1000yrd mark.
Paduan Learner thanks i will checkout the online classes as you never stop learning and i'm certainly no expert
for starters i will be looking at 1000yrd but would like to get out to a mile someday.
i hold fantasy's at that being an easy task but you need to have a goal and mine is to first to shoot tight group at 1000 then go from there.

I have two friends that shoot the 338 Lapua. One of them has hit man sized targets at 2650yds and the other to about 2300yds. You didn`t specify barrel twist, but if it is a 10 or faster, go with 300gr bullets.

I would say that would be the right track. I dream about being able to own a setup like that. Everything is real quality parts and you really dont ever need anything better then. GA Precision makes grreat rifles. It may be overkill until you have shot 1000 meters well and can move on. If you arent reloading, at somewhere around $5 dollars a round, thats some expensive practice.

Remoah i live near ballarat but i work in the mines in nsw till christmas .
as far as i know the rifle is in aus.
excaliber i'm have sent gap an email to get some info on the rifle so i don't know what the twist rate is. thats some very impressive shooting.
SavageMOA i will buy some factory loads for starters then start reloading .
i have a new swarovski pvi2 6.5 -25x 40 that needs to go on something nice from the sounds of it this gap might be it's new home.

you're talking about the one on UsedGuns...
As expensive as GAP is, 7k is a bit much for one, given the exchange rate, you're paying 7k for a rifle worth 5k tops, that was made for someone else. Personally, I'd get GAP to make you one to the exact spec you want it, and it'd probably round out to about 7k...

Either that, or save up to 9,000 and buy that HS.50-M1 and piss off everyone at the range.

Also, if you ever wanna hook a fellow shooter up with somewhere to hunt

GAP's standard or barrels they buy for inventory are 1-9.5 twist. GAP does order other twist barrels for .338's but they are specific for the customers build. George would have to give you the details based on the s/n of the action etc....and what the build consisted of.

My gun is a 9.5 twist and I shoot 250's and .300's thur it with no accuracy difference between the bullet weights.
