Hope to take it out for some testing today.
27" tall 20" wide. Head swings from side to side.

Re: New hostage target

that's sharp, the swing would help all that walking out there and a change in aim to the other side.

let us know how it works.

what caliber you using? in other words, would a .223 be enough to knock it to the other side?

i'm thinking you have a winner there, price?

That is my main concern. The head might be a little heavy for the smaller calibers. I want to test it today at 200, 300 and 400 meters with a .243.

if you have a .223 of any sort available (preferably with 55 gr heads) you can kill 2 birds with one stone. actually, if it works on the .223, it should work with the .243.

even if the .223 does it at 200, and not the other ranges, you can state that in the sales pitch. chances are you probably know someone with a .223 that wouldn't mind helping you with your R&D

Re: New hostage target

Shot it with a .243 at 300,400, and 500 meters. The head moved great at 300 and 400 but only went to the other side at 500 meters if I hit on the outside part of the head. But you still could easily tell if you hit the head or not.I also shot it with a .45 ACP at about 15 yards and it only moved the head around to the other side if if hit toward the edge.
I will have to try it wit a .223 later. I just needed to test it out before weekends match.

Sorry about the hostage hits but he took a couple for R&D.
Looks like Mike Tyson tried to bite his ear off.

Re: New hostage target

Sweet! I remember you saying you liked that silhouette, the swinger was a great idea. I'm thinking one at like 850 next time we go long range would be perfect.

I'll have to have one to of course.

Re: New hostage target

My idea would be to reduce the size to 90 percent of full size and make it out of ar500 or similar steel so it could be shot with 223 and 308 at 100 yds. Reducing the size 10 percent might help it swing easier and would not be that noticeable. I could use these for some LE sniper classes. I would order four like that.

I have an idea. It might not be practical or work but here it is.
Could you take a wood dowel about 1" in diameter and cut two disks about .5" thick. Then bore a hole in the end of each one just deep enough to embed a Neodymium disc magnet so it is flush with the end. Then attach each one behind the ear of the hostage using a thick pad of silicone. If the target is leveled and plumb then the only force keeping the head in place would be the pull from the magnet and friction of the pivot point. It should take less force to swing it to the other side where the combination of the wood and silicone might absorb the impact enough that it will stick to the magnet on the other side without bouncing off. If that works then the wooden discs could be protected from spatter by banding them with metal tubing.
Just a wild thought.

However it turns out I want one!

I think that might be a good idea. I think I will make a 90 percent size and try it out.
It's hard to make 1 size and thickness that works for everything (.223 to .338) and every distance.

The target weighs 50LBS. The bases weigh 16LBS and 19LBS deoends on which one you get.

I would think that the 3/8", 1/2" and 5/8" would all vary considerably in what force is required to move them through their full travel. Also, if you were to lower the pivoting head just a tad (so there's no air space or daylight showing), there would be less mass to move with your shot, once the excess material is removed.

Re: New hostage target

Kurt That looks great. I am interested in at least one, if not two. They are of course AR500 right? How much are you selling them for?

Re: New hostage target

Kurt that is awesome dude! They are gonna sell great

does the head swinging help dissipate the energy enough to come down in thickness a bit?

Re: New hostage target

When you come up with a price, be sure to post it. I like the idea of changing out the suspect with lighter materials or heavier, given the caliber (to help it swing). This idea would be especially cool for pistol/sbr type stuff.

Send me info when you figure it all out please.

Re: New hostage target

Or, rather than the neat looking full head for the "bad guy", put a T-slot target that represents the no reflex, or eye/nose, T-slot for the bad guy. The lower weight of the smaller piece of steel would swing to each side more easily.

Re: New hostage target

I bought that mini one in the pic after the match. Great piece of gear. We are going to shoot it as a hostage taker out to 300 and then tie the hostage taker back out of sight and shoot the main target further out. Very sturdy piece of gear, like all Kurt's targets... Keep up the good work Kurt. I'll be buying more of these and the full size ones ASAP.

Put an earring through it, Kurt.
