Finally traded my Marlin slug gun in for a Howa 1500 in stainless a couple weeks ago. Got it in .243 and its going to be my primary yote and crow gun. Shoots great but I find that the stock tends to be a bit too flexible on the forend. As of now its got the original Nikko scope on it, might swap to my Simmons Prostaff later on, and it has a Blackhawk bipod. May do a mag conversion in the future.

Re: New Howa

I had a 1500 and actually thought the action was smoother than a r700, the HACT trigger is much better than the remmington trigger.
Great value rifle.
Mag conversion is very affordable.
Congrats.

Re: New Howa

It was between this and a new synthetic A-Bolt and a badass gray laminate Ruger M-77. A bolt was too light for my tastes and I hated the stiff bolt on the Ruger.

Shoots great so far, I was only able to get 1.5"-2" 5 shot groups with Winchester 80g Super X SP shooting off a bipod, I did notice the forearm was twisting and contacting the barrel too when torqued too badly. So I'm not sure if its that, my shooting, or it doesnt like SuperX.

Me and my buddy are getting into reloading so we'll see if the groups tighten up or not.

Re: New Howa

skkeeter you are correct about the vangard/howa being the same. I would second you on the stock. While you are working on it, I would get a trigger job done as well. I had a 22-250 howa varmint a few years ago that shot unbelievably.

Just a note. Mine was very particular about ammo. It loved the moly coated 40gr. Hornady Vmax but the same 55gr round it would not put in a 12" pie plate at 100yds!

Looking good! I picked up a Vanguard S2 (as stated pretty much the same as yours) only because i liked its trigger more than the howa, plus i wanted 257 weatherby

. Look at Nikon's yote special line of scopes i just put one on the vanguard and hasnt done me wrong yet.
