My first post. I averaged all my prior hunts were animal were taken, elevation, temp with a look at bar. pressure and humidity. So why not set my new hunt rifle with a zero for the averages of elevation of 7200 ft and temp of 45 degrees utilizing a trusted ballistic cal. with all normal input bullet bc, twist rate, muzzle vel (ft/s)......etc. pros and cons Thanks in advance and for a fantastic website.

I would have to agree, you are over thinking it. I would suggest you look at the average range that you are taking the animals and start there first. Especially if you are talking about a true hunting rifle.

Welcome to the Hide.

Re: New hunting rifle zero pros/cons

Are you trying to get this all set up for customized BDC turrets like Huskemaw or Leupy CDS? If not, just get out and shoot. Make notes, make a dope card off any of the numerous ballistics calculators and then verify that at the range. Trigger time is your best friend, every time. Until you actually shoot that range on your card/chart/cheat sheet etc, you have nothing but a S.W.A.G... scientific wild ass guess.

Re: New hunting rifle zero pros/cons

averages can work to 3-400 yards and after that you better have a baseline and adjust accordingly.

Example: It is possible to sight in for 300 yards and hold over at 400 yards. It is easier to get a ballistic scope.

But even at short distances you still need to adjust for angle.
