New Les Baer .264 AR

Re: New Les Baer .264 AR

It's basically a 6.5 Grendel with a slightly different chamber spec (kindof like the more modern 6.8SPC chambers vs. the SAAMI chamber) and no licensing fees paid to Alexander Arms.

It's not even that.

It has a .295 neck like the 6.5 CSS and the AA match chambers. AA standard chamber is .300.

It doesn't have a compound angle throat like the 6.5 CSS or the AA chambers.

And without the compound angle throat.

All that means is that it's more of a match chamber compared to standard 6.5G.So in a way...tighter tolerence, yes

Re: New Les Baer .264 AR

The Lee Die set will work and so will every other Grendel product on the market including C-products mags and cases that are marked Grendel. Les's chamber is a SLIGHTLY modified grendel chamber (in the throat) that was designed around the Hornady 123 AMAX and the other VLD bullets on the market like the Sierra 123 MK. Like Mudbug said, it doesn't have the compound angle throat like the grendel. The grendel chamber was optimized by Bill A. and Co. to get very good accuracy out of a wide range of bullet shapes and weights. The Les chamber is trying to get some more velocity and squeeze the accuracy with the heavier VLDs. Les's 264-LBC ammo is what the chamber is designed for. It is a 123 AMAX loaded by Black Hills.

Les guarantees his guns are capable of a certain level of accuracy, so I'm sure it is with his ammo or similar reloads with the right shooter, etc etc. If this load and bullet interest you it is probably a good way to go for a heavy, cut-rifled barrel.

If you want to shoot light varmint bullets up to heavier 120-123 grs or build more of a "tactical" gun then I would get a barrel by Lothar Walther, Shilen, Satern, or Alexander.

Re: New Les Baer .264 AR

I'm thinking something along the lines of an 18 inch SPRish flavor. So, 120-130gr bullets would be the most common loads. I'm not sure what would keep the lighter loads, say the 95gr v-max from being workable. Maybe not ideal, but 1/2 MOAish loads, when worked up properly. Or am I missing something?

Re: New Les Baer .264 AR

I just ordered one of Les Baer's .264 barrels to replace a Shaw that had less than stellar accuracy on my Grendel . Hopefully I'll have her ready to shoot in a couple weeks . I'll be running AA Grendel ammo so we'll se how it performs .

Re: New Les Baer .264 AR

KYshooter,

It very well may. I really don't know as I haven't shot one. Just giving you the background on what they are advertising as to the purpose of the two different chambers. All I know is that Les's group played with the chamber so that it optimized performance from the VLDs. VLDs in the grendel chamber are hit or miss. Some guys have great luck with them and some guys can't group them at all. I have two grendel barrels and one of them shoots SMK 123s into tiny little 1/2 MOA groups and the other barrel won't put them under 2" no matter what load, seating depth, etc I try. Go figure. I've been told by people of higher authority than myself that VLDs can be a little finicky. If you really like the idea of the Les barrel, I would call them up and run it by them about different weight loads.

Re: New Les Baer .264 AR

Had a guy come in and order one last week. Will check out fit finish when it arrives. As for range report might take him out to the range so I can get one. Will keep you posted

Re: New Les Baer .264 AR

Do like my dealer does, says its not in yet (when it is) and he goes out and has his way with it for several days.
Just kidding, but we do joke him (the dealer) about doing it.

GGN, did you get a price on a complete rifle and an upper? I have a price list from Shot Show and the complete rifle was only $185 to $220 more than the upper. Should of ordered one at Shot Show as they were $200 off for Shot Show special.

Will do , the barrel is on the way . I'll have pics up by Friday with a range report to follow .

Re: New Les Baer .264 AR

Here is a pic with the new barrel installed . Fit and finish is outstanding . However the range report has been delayed by a busted washing machine .

Re: New Les Baer .264 AR

I have a Black Hole weaponry 18inch barrel in 264LBC, with Black Hills 123smk (2415fps)ammo produced for Les Baer,I can get one raggedly hole at 100 yards. With Hornadys 6.5 Grendel ammo 123amax (2440 fps), its very close to 1/2moa. It seems to like my reloads as well, Hornady brass, CCI 450's, 30.3 grains AA2520, 123 smks. Several precision AR builders are using 264LBC over the grendel, 224AR, 6mmBR are also getting more and more popular. Going to chrono some more loads tomorrow and stretch her legs at 300 for group size.

Hey Marty,
I'm getting exactly the same speed and groups from Hornady out of mine too. Have you tried the Scenars yet?
