New Lilja barrel..won't exract

I got a Lilja drop in barrel today for my CZ 457.. Measure the depth on the receiver face to the bolt face.. It measured 1.237" .. subtracted the .043" for recommanded headspace, which equals 1.194".. the barrel shank is 1.2" .. which means I need a shim of .006".. Installed 1 .001" and a .005" shim and re-assembled and installed into the MPA chassis.. it now does not eject a unfired round or a empty shell .. put the stock barrel back in and it ejected both.. what's going on with the Lilja ??

Sound like you have a CZ. Check out this link - sounds like Lilja uses a tight reamer on the CZ barrels as well.

I would call Lilja and ask them to fix it or refund your money. Dan is a benchrest guy, and tight chambers are his thing. There are lots of other CZ drop ins available now - Bartlein, Proof, etc. FWIW, my factory varmint barrel on my 455 shoots very well, and I've never felt the need to replace it - it only has 1-2K rounds through it. Extractor cut and the extractor claw can be very very picky. Compare and measure how your current bolt and extractor claw make contact with your factory barrel vs the new lilja barrel.

Play with the headspace on live rounds to see if you can get it extract. Point muzzle in a safe back stop in case of a ND. Or do it at the range.

I was thinking of increasing the headspace from .043 to .045 by adding another shim.. as far as comparing and measuring the extractor claw and contact, I'm afraid that's a little above my skill level and really have no way of doing it anyways.. I plan on calling Lilja tomorrow and see what they suggest.. if nothing else, I guess I'll just return it and eat the shipping charges and get most of my money back, and put that towards another barrel.. probably the Bartlien from Area 419.. glad I didn't get to the range today and test it, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to return it at all.

I had the same issue. Another hide member suggested that carbon buildup in the chamber can cause a spent round from ejecting. Knowing this now I periodically brush out the chamber. The Match chamber has super tight tolerances. Once I starting cleaning during a shooting session it ejected flawlessly. When I clean the barrel I also run oil with a swab several times down the barrels which can inhibit the carbon sticking to the chamber wall and beyond.

I called them about replacement or refund and he told me to jump the bullet .130" and drop the charge down 6 whole grains. No thanks. If it dont shoot this weekend with all the different loads that I have ready for it, I'm going to see how far I can javelin this bitch into the field behind my house.

Tight chambers expose weak extractor hooks/spring. Fresh machined chamber magnifies the situation. Bore scope the chamber and put the extractor hook under a magnifying glass, that might give you some direction.

Sorry for your troubles, but your post is absolutely hilarious. Javelin the barrel. I know what you mean. I had a ruger rpr I was the same way with. I literally beat it around a tree and sent it sailing out through the woods where it resides.

A couple of things to check.. Okay, more than a couple.. Lol

The first thing that I'd try is to check the timing of the extractor and holder grooves by taking your barreled action out of the Chassis/stock.. Loosen the grub screws enough that you can twist the barrel slightly while still fully in the receiver.. Now, close the bolt on an empty chamber. While gently twisting the barrel, you should be able to feel it stop in each direction of twist. Center the barrel between the stops and put a timing mark on the barrel and action so that you can see if the barrel moves out of alignment while torquing it down. Now, snug up the grub screws until they each just make contact with the barrel tenon. Then tighten each a little more while alternating between them until they are fully torqued. Now check to see if your timing mark shifted from center while tightening. It's possible that the grub screw cuts aren't aligned properly. This test can help you see if that might be the case.

Try pointing your Lilja barrel straight down at the floor and drop a live round into the chamber. Does it fully seat the rim against the breach face, or does the cartridge stop and leave the rim sticking up a little from being fully seated? If it's sticking up, how much pressure from your finger does it take to push it in until it's fully seated? CZ's are notorius for not being able to extract a live round that is engraving on the lands. But, the extractor groove can be modified to fix the issue. See below on how to do that.

How deep, or close to the chamber wall are the extractor slots cut? Compare the Lilja to your CZ barrel. If the wall thickness of the Lilja is significantly thicker, then that is probably your issue. A small needle file can be used to thin the metal in the groove which will allow the extractor claw to fully grab your case. Go slowly and carefully so that you dont file all the way through and into the chamber.

Check for burrs on the breach face at the edges of the extractor and holder grooves. If present, they need to be removed or else they can cause the bolt face to not fully close. This condition could cause an issue with your extractor and holder to not be able to fully engage the rim of the cartridge.

Are there any chips out of the extractor claw? I had one chip off at a 45° angle and it wouldn't extract a fired round. Happened in the middle of last year's NRL22 Nationals match.. My rifle wouldn't extract a live or fired round/case.

Have you taken the bolt apart? The C-spring that holds the extractor, holder and striker in place are very easy to stretch. If stretched, get a supply of new ones and replace. IMO, this is the weak link in the 457. The exposed striker and striker channel need to be cleaned periodically and the spring WILL eventually get stretched and need to be replaced.

Before performing any of the fixes that I mentioned, I'd recommend calling Carson at Lilja and let him know if you found something wrong with the barrel. Carson is a decent guy. Just calmly explain your problem and he'll get you taken care of.

All of those other manufacturers are fine if you like Bentz chambers and excessive headspace. ?

I'm not a BR shooter and the rifle is just a fun and expensive range gun..lol I do shoot some PRS meets, but it's just for fun and bragging rights.. The reason I wanted to replace the stock barrel(which shot great btw) was that it is a 16.5" barrel and I just wanted something a little better and a little longer.. I was looking at the Area 419 barrels, but they were $100 more than the Lilja.. So I went with the Lilja.. so a little extra headspece wouldn't bother me as long as it's reliable

Ok.. had a little time this morning to check things out and compare the Lilja barrel to my stock CZ barrel..

Checked timing of the barrel and position in the receiver.. Looked good.. loosened slightly and was able to feel the barrel hit on both sides in receiver..

Made a small mark on the underside of the barrel and receiver where they met up.. loosened the barrel a bit and tightened and torqued to spec.. No movement

Extractor claws have no chips and the c-clip is gtg..
Small burr on the face of breach end.. removed it, no difference.. still would not eject a fired round

Removed the barrel and did a side by side comparison.. That's where I noticed a difference in the extractor cuts.. The stock CZ cuts are a lot closer to the chamber than the Lilja is.. *see photo

I emailed Carson @ Lilja on Friday and he said he was at Shot Show.. He said he would get back to me on Monday when he was back in the office to figure this out..

Hopefully the grooves are the issue.. I want this barrel to work.. if not, there is always Option #2

Maybe it's just my imagination, but it kinda looks like you can "see" where the extractor claws have been making contact with the inner edge of those slots. I'd imagine, given the ramp of the slots and the shape of the extractor claws, that contact would tend to push the extractor claws back from center and reduce engagement with the rim of the shell case.

Maybe relieving those ramps more, possibly even matching the factory barrel, would help?

dude, i feel the exact same way. my lilja barrel will be nothing more than a tomato stick. i wasted over 500 bullets trying to get this fucker to shoot. straight garbage, not to mention, their CS. If i ever screw another lilja barrel on to any of my rifles, i hope a bus runs me over.

It sounds more like your having an extraction problem vs an ejection issue. If the extractor claw fails to purchase the case rim then its either because the clearance slot is wrong, the HS is incorrect, or the Extractor has some sort of issue. The fact it works with the OEM barrel, but then fails on the Lilja suggests either a machining or installation issue.

Take all the tennon measuring/subtracting and throw it out the window. Install the barrel. Install a gauge. If the gauge goes, shim the face of it with something of known thickness until it prevents the bolt handle from dropping. If it is .041" +/- .001" your in the clear.

Now, look at the extractor slot feature. These are machined most often with a key type cutter. -Basically a little saw blade. Describing this is tough, so bear with me. Cutting the slot tangent to the radius of the tool is not the best approach because it leaves a very, very thin wall right at the breech face. Over time it will bulge outward and make extraction more difficult. The trick is to be "ahead" of the tangent point by some degree so that the tool is cutting "away" from the inner chamber wall. (I hope that makes sense) This can be an issue at times if the nose/outer portion of the extractor claw isn't factored into the shape. The nose can rub on the relief cut and prevent the actual claw from grabbing the case rim.

So, you have a few things to look at a little closer in order to get a better feel on how to proceed.




Last. If you guys get the punk on this, I can help. I'm very comfortable with rimfires. It won't be free, but it'll be done correctly.

My Lilja 17HM2 barrel has a very hard time feeding. Carson knew this but never disclosed it on the website. Instead he sales the barrels to people and lets them deal with it. Then when you call him to discuss the shortcomings of his product he gets irate, verbally abusive and defensive to a paying customer who probably would have bought more barrels.

I will give credit where credit is due, the barrel is fairly accurate so I won't be using for a pry bar anytime soon.

IBI makes CZ 457 barrels. They don't do muzzle threading though, but the barrels will probably run about $325-350 shipped unless you want the fancy fluting.

Another evidence point, my buddy just got a new lilja barrel for his RPRR, and the extractor cuts are like yours 1911. They're way too thick on the wall of the chamber so there's not enough space for the claw to extract. I don't know why that's not obvious to them when it's like rimfire 101 on extractor cuts?

Lilja asked him to send the barrel AND the action to them... so he'll be w/o his rifle for a few weeks, or whoever knows how long.

The thing does shoot well though... it might not extract well, but when we do groups at 100 yards, they're .5 - .75" so it shoots very well. Too bad it doesn't extract which makes it pretty useless.

Yeah, Lilja will never get another cent from me. I would have probably went the IBI route if they offered a threaded version. I got my suppressors to use not sit and getting another non-threaded barrel from IBI doesn't make sense for me and my use. I think they make great barrels though, accuracy wise.

I heard Brownells will start stocking IBI barrels and those will be threaded. I went to their store on Tuesday and it looks like their business is booming.

My CZ shoots about that, but with a flyer here and there.. plus it's a 16.5" and I want something longer.. My Kidd build shoots .5-.75" @ 100 with Federal AutoMatch.. and I have half the money in that than I do in my CZ

I have a bartlein ans have talked to area 419. These have a bentz chamber not a match chamber. Area 419 orders them from bartlein and then just bolts them on. mine shoots sk rifle match very well and center x too. Well enough I took it off for sale. But dropping a bullet in and turning it upside down and it fall out is not confidence inspiring. My next one will IBI or lothar walther at 22in long.

My Lilja 17HM2 barrel has a very hard time feeding. Carson knew this but never disclosed it on the website. Instead he sales the barrels to people and lets them deal with it. Then when you call him to discuss the shortcomings of his product he gets irate, verbally abusive and defensive to a paying customer who probably would have bought more barrels.

I will give credit where credit is due, the barrel is fairly accurate so I won't be using for a pry bar anytime soon.

Oh, it's a good thing for him he didnt get that far with me on the phone. It would be a bad day in lilja land if it had.

I never considered that option to begin with my 457. Plus even if I had, discovering what MPA will do for the money I would have changed my mind anyway.

Thanks littlepod for the heads up on the IBI barrel for sale. I called Brownells and asked about the IBI barrel they are selling. They couldn't tell what chamber it had. The guy did tell me the barrels are received threaded from IBI?? Seems like IBI would set up their process to thread all the barrels.

I will be calling MPA today, I'd still rather have a custom fit like they can provide for a few more dollars.
