Rifle Scopes New longer distance shooter looking for recomendations for a 308 scope

Hello Everyone, I hope I don't open a can of worms here as I fear my question could be similar to blondes verses brunets verse redheads. A little background about me. Long time lurker and new time poster. I am still a baker’s dozen away from retirement and I have been into firearms my whole life. I am looking to stretch out my shooting to 500 yards max. I have purchased a DPMS SASS Gen2 308 rifle (not looking to talk about the rifle as it is a done deal) and I am looking for recommendation on a middle of range scope for a 308 round. I have budgeted $1,500 dollars for a scope and I would like at least 10X for my aging eyes. Now I live in the Pacific Northwest and would love to support our home town boys over at Leupold but, to be honest the feedback from them was very lacking. Now I am sure many people on this site have sent countless amount of money on sand I would like to tape that wisdom.

So to sum up I am looking for a tactical (at least looking) 10x minimum power scope for the 308 NATO round in a budget of $1,500. Your thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated. Makes and models and reticles info is helpful. Thanks everyone.

There's a used vortex 6x24x50 with LaRue mount in the classified section for about $1k. My 6x24x50 vortex has been spectacular. Can't say enough great things about.

I think 3.5-15x is an ideal range for most .308WIN rifles, and since you're shooting a semi-auto you should consider one with a reticle with more holdover support. At your budget, the Bushnell HDMR with the G2 reticle would fit nicely. It's not built like a tank and optical quality is average at best, but it's still a compact FFP at 3.5-21x and the newer models have better turrets than before.

nutin wrong w/ leupy's. you could very easily find one of those in your specs for what you want to pay for it, and you would prob be very happy w/ it

A used Steiner at 16x will be perfect, best glass. Other options would be a used Razor HD 20x. Or you could get a new SWFA super sniper in 20x

20x is a little much but you can always dial back.

Not impressed with the PST or Viper glass. Nope!

I just bought the Bushnell 3.5-21X50 G2DMR (2013 model) from Scott @ Liberty Optics with the ADM Recon mount for just over $1300 with free shipping. it was recommended to me by a number of Hide members. I opted for this model since I didn't need the 10 mil turrets or zero stop the 2014 model has on the rifle it went on. As for not being built like a tank imo it is and its optics are just as clear as any of my 5 high magnification NightForce NXS scopes, 2 5.5-22X50 2 8-52X56 and 1 3-15X50 all with ZS and HST. They are built in Japan and are a quality product. If you require ZS and HST the new model at $1500 will work well for you. I couldn't be happier with my scope.

I've always liked a leupold mk4 3.5-10x40 on an AR platform. However, a steiner 4-16x would also be nice and suit your requirements, however you'll probably only find one used as they have been discontinued. Id also suggest the weaver 3-15x50 or swfa 3-15x42(slimmer objective) but why would you spend less on optics when your budget is at $1500?

I've got this Burris 6-24 Signature w/Bal Mil-dot reticle on Gunbroker for $550, great optics and not used very much. Getting a more powerful scope for 600BR.

Good price on a US Optics scope and would work really well for what you're after. Or a T-pal version would put the parallax up a little closer and on the left side where it belongs. USO customer service is second to none! They are coming out w/ a EREK knob that will have larger numbers to make reading them a little easier for us OLD GUYS!

Shop around and you'll find what you really want, stick with the upper end in each line and you be happy.

I just bought one of these from Mile High on Monday with the mil-gap reticle. All I can say is wow! Exceptional quality and well worth holding out to raise another $150 on your budget.

I just got a great deal on a barely used one w/badger ordnance rings, EREK, #1 M40 windage knob, digital illumination, sunshade, GAP reticle, Mil/Mil. Super nice scope, great glass and 100 MOA of elevation. I understand the newer models don't have that much elevation as per Arnold @ USO. With a 25 MOA base I have roughly 32 Mrad of elevation, actually too much for this weapon.
I couldn't be happier with that purchase..... just what I had been looking for over a year.
