New LR-308 ***Pics Up***

Guys,
I just received my DPMS LR-308 and I fed a few rounds through it today and had an issue with the feed ramp gouging the bullet on the round.

Besides sending it back to DPMS, is there any alternative to this problem... Just shoot it a bit to see if it quits?

Should have bought a RR my brother,,,,,, Sorry to hear you are having problems. Is the feed ramp centered? Is it beveled on each side? I have seen a few that needed a little TLC before they worked properly. May need a little bevel on the sides of the ramp to make it like the ammo you are feeding it. If you know a local gun smith let him have a look and see if its something simple he can do. If not then box it up.

Mine took about 100-150 rounds to kinda smooth out. All my ar's leave a mark on the bullet as it feeds but it dosn't dig into them real hard. How does it run..... no jams? Maybe some more round though it or a round file and LIGHTLY file the edge of the ramps.

I have yet to shoot it as I received it today. But I guess I will just shoot it a bit, and then do the test again. I have the tools to smooth it out, I just dont wanna void the warranty.

I use Gene Williams because its a 20 minute drive from home. He's affordable and gets my stuff in and out. That will mean a serious drive or shipping to FFL bullshit to go to Gene from Houston. Im sure if you check around here on the hide, you can find a recommended smith close to you.

A piece of wood dowel rolled in 600grit lapping compound will clean it up in about 5 minutes per ramp. You gain a new skill and save yourself the time and cost of shipping it to a gunsmith.

Split the upper and lower apart, pull the BCG, stuff a paper towel in the chamber and polish away.

When you're done just hose it out with brake kleen spray, pull the papertowel and blast one more time from the muzzle.

Done.

also mailing to an ffl is ok. i mailed my receiver to an ffl and they will mail it back to me directly. if its just the upper for feed ramp work, no problem at all. the smith wont be able to function test it unless he has a DPMS lower.

If you havent found a smith yet in Houston, you should call A-Gun shop off highway 6, also SOG Armory does good work too. I am having my barrel cut down by them and turn around will be about 2 weeks and 100$ for rethreading, crowning, everything. Good guys, just dont talk to John, talk to Craig or the guy with the power mustache. Also, you can not go wrong with Jim Pruetts Guns and Ammo. I dont know if they have an actual smith, but they will definitely point you in the best direction. Thats the 3 best shops on the west side of Houston.

Gees brother, you put away the bolt action and jumped to a semi-auto. Just couldn't resist the need to burn more ammo uh.

There are a couple of folks that you might want to get in touch with that are local to us. The folks over at Texas Tactical Gear can take a look at it and tell you what it wrong with it. I use them for a lot of different things. There is also Ed Vandenburg just off of Hwy 3. I have never used him personally, but I hear nothing but good things about him. Apparently does nice work with the semi-autos. You can also call Chris over at Aquila Firearms in La Porte. Specializes in bolt guns and did some great work for me, but he may be able to get you taken care of.

Big plus 1,,,mine did the samething now its nice and smooth and feeds perfect.

10-4! Thats what I am going to do tomorrow for several hours... I am still going to take it to the gunsmith down here to let him look at it and see what he thinks.

Mine dose it from time to time I was using some LC 7.62x 51 and it got jammed. I called the factory about it. They said just use the .308 the other stuff will wear it out quicker

I found out exactly what is doing it... I fed another round through and found copper on the edges of the feed ramp. The ridges are pretty sharp. So I am thinking about getting after it with my dremel and then polish it.

Before you do anything make sure its not the front 2 lips in your mag that are causing this. I had the same issue and had to sand them down. No more marks now.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but the rifle really marks up the bullet when a loaded round is ejected.
To verify that you actually have a rough spot on feeding, and not ejection, you have to eject the cartridge by pulling on the charging handle slowly until some brass is exposed, then press the case in to hold the bullet away from anything that might mark it on the way out.

I have done that to verify that it wasnt happening on the ejection of the round. It is happening on the feeding cycle, I appreciate the input anyway.

hell thats not as bad as I thought it would have been. I have to throw some rounds away because after loading it several times they look like they've been dragged in the driveway. I say smooth your feed ramps a little if you want but just using it will probley fix it self

Besides the marks on the bullet how do you like the DPMS. I am going to buy an AR 10 or DPMS. I want a 18 to 20 inch free float barrel. I am just researching which twist rate to use 1:10 or 1:11.25. I will be using 168Fed.Gold Match no farhter out than 600 yds. Since you have one , any recomendations?

I believe they only come with 1:10 ? Mine is anyway. It's a shooter.

Im sorry I was not more specific. The Armalite AR-10 is a 1:11.25 twist and the DPMS are a 1:10 in a 6 grove. I will only be shooting 168 Federal Gold Match, but the cheap crap to break the barrel in. So I have been trying to research which barrel is optimal for the 168 FGM. But so far I am liking what I am hearing about the DPMS. Thanks for any info you can give me I greatly appreciate it.

Well I went and shot today... The rifle out of the box is a helluva shooter. Same hole, 5 rd groups all day @ 100 with random loads... It just tears the brass up a bit. No feeding problems whatsoever with the magpul mags, didnt keep the factory so I cant elaborate on those.

Recoil off a bipod was really almost nothing. With the brake I have coming it will be like shooting a .22 probably. It does need a trigger BAD, but I have an ar gold trigger coming.

The load for the gun has ended up being 45.2 gr of Varget(anything higher and I get extractor marks),175gr smk's,cci-br2 primers and win brass with a OAL of 2.800. It is subject to change once I take it out further, but it will get no higher than 45.2gr.

I dont know if it happens more significantly with AR's than bolt guns, but once the barrel heated up(20rds in 45 secs) I tried to shoot a group again and it walked on me a little bit. But after a few minutes of cooling and it was good to go again.

I will post some pics of my rifle later on tonight... So all in all, I am very pleased with my new purchase.

Where are the pics of the rifle? You been talking all this time, showing pics of scratched bullets and bla bla bla so where the hell are the pics?
Glad you got a shooter you like. Now put it down and get the stock for the bolt gun.

I have a LR308 24" as well. It shoots great with everything I have fed through it. I haven't noticed the marks on the bullets but next time at the range I'll look to see if its doing it or not. I have never had to unload the rifle after chambering a live round. I looked on my snap caps and they seem fine.

Mine has harris pods, the DPMS palmshelf grip and Millett LRS-1 scope. With handloads mine shoots 168 SMK with .4 MOA at 100 yards all day long. I can cover 5 round groups with a dime.

44.0 grains of Varget, fed match primers, 168 gr SMK, Fed GM brass (the brass is a little soft and marks easy but its free so who cares)
