hey guys,

looking for some input on 2 scopes. I've been lurking the forums for years wanting to get into LR and with a recent trade offer I was able to get a 700 aac sd in a XLR EVO chassis.

Ive narrowed it down to two scopes:

Vortex Raxor Gen 1 5-20x50 or Vortex Razor Gen 2 4.5-27x56

I can get the gen 1 wth rings out the door for $1500. Cheapest I can find the gen 2 for is $2300 + rings.

im hopefully looking for someone who has owned both, owns both, or has had some decent time behind both of these options to provide some input.

If if I choose the gen 1 will I want to upgrade later? If I choose the gen 2 will I have what I need for years to come,( in theory)?

I've had the Gen 1 and currently have the Gen 2. I'd pick up a used Gen 2 if I were you, they pop up here all the time for around $2000 +/-. While the Gen 1 was a nice, repeatable, and durable scope, the Gen 2 fixed everything I didn't like about it.

The Gen 2 Razor will do all you need until something revolutionary hits the market.

I'd say go gen II if you can, buy once/cry once kind of a deal. I own 2 of them just because they get the job done quite nicely for alot less than the rest. A gen II will last you as long as you want to shoot LR, and then you can pass it down to your son!

I have a gen I that I use a good amount, and one thing to note is that I consider it a 5-15 or so, not a 5-20. I find the reticle to be too thick past 15 to be useful, even for shooting groups at 100 and 200. If you're okay with that as the top end magnification, maybe look at the 3-18 gen ii, I know they can go for 1600ish in the px.

Keep an eye on the PX around here as mentioned. You can get some great deals.

Also I agree with everyone, grab the best you can within your budget (or even just outside of your budget). The scope is one of the most important parts of your system.

I own both.
the gen 1 is great but the gen 2 is definitely better. Keep your eye on the classifieds and on sales and you could possibly snag a gen 2 for under 2k.

I've never owned a Gen2, however I've looked through plenty. I do own the gen1 and the AMG. I would say the Gen 1 will get the job done but is not as user friendly as the Gen 2, the gen 2 just seemed to have a much better eye relief. I chose the AMG just due to weight, and the fact that it's 100% American made.
