I just got this rifle last week. Got a really good deal on it from a guy and got it pretty much how it is currently set up. Stock rifle, Harris, GG&G 20 moa base (any info good/bad on this?), Burris Extreme rings, Bushnell Elite 3200 10x glass.

First of all I know the rings are way to tall but the rings that he had on the rifle were garbage. The Burris Extremes were the only ones I had on hand. I plan on upgrading to a 30mm scope so Im not gonna waste money buying lower ones.

So that brings me to my first question for you guys. Which scope should I go with? Budget will be under 1k. Max range for me is probably 800 yards but I might be able to shoot 1k plus on rare occasions.

The 4 main options I am looking at are:

SS 10x scope.

+ Its a good piece of glass and wont break the bank
- Its a fixed 10x

SS 3x9 FFP mil/mil

+ Variable usefull for closer shots
+ FFP
+ Not to expensive
- Not sure how the 9x will hold up for long range shots

Vortex Viper PST 4x14 FFP mil/mil

+ Higher upper end magnification
+ FFP
+ Illuminated
- Getting to the upper end of my budget
- Might as well step up to the 6x24 model for 50 bucks more

Vortex Viper PST 6x24 FFP mil/mil

+/- Same as the other PST

Second question is the stock. Basically is the AICS worth the money over the HS precision?

FYI... Budget is a concern for me. I could save a little more and just go with a Nighforce but I am also saving up for a Vickers carbine course early next year.

Re: New LTR project

PST 6-24x50, the 4-14x is good but you may as well get the extra magnification while you're at it which will help when making those 500m+ shots.

I'm running a Bushnell 4200 6-24x50mm Tactical FFP, the ONLY reason i have this over the PST is because Vortex aren't sold in Australia. However next time i will be getting one shipped from the US, once i have the money.

Re: New LTR project

Lower rings for sure. Fighting for proper cheek weld will lead to poor shooting and disappointment. Replace the trigger with a Timney, the stock one sucks, IMO. I used my LTR with the same scope out to 1k yds without issue. Although not ideal the 10x can work. Spend your coin on ammo or reloading gear.

Out of the scopes listed, the PST 6-24 would be a great choice. Offers a lot of features for the money. I run them myself and so far am pleased with their performance.

The AICS is a love or hate thing. Its better than the factory stock in build but, if it does not work for you then its a waste of money.

Re: New LTR project

The HS Precision stock on your gun is a pretty good stock. I'd keep it. All of the scopes you listed are great and would work for the ranges you have listed. I recently purchased both the SWFA 3-9x42mm & 10x42mm HD and have been very impressed with the quality of both of them. My previous experience has been with a Leupold Mark 4 2.5-8x36 Illum. and I like the SWFA scopes I listed just as well, if not better. They are also readily available for about half of your scope budget. I would spend the rest of the money on low rings, Jewell or Timney trigger, & Federal GMM 168gr ammo.

Re: New LTR project

The stock is good.

Your glass choices are good.
I would lean to the 4-16x but if it is only a range gun, the 6-24x is a good option.

Also consider the Weaver Tactical FFP 3-15x scope and the bushnell tacticals.

The Weaver is about 100 less than the PST, some reports indicate that it MAY have better glass.
However, the PST has a more useful reticle and comes with a sunshade (an additional cost for the weaver)

Re: New LTR project

The factory stock is pretty decent. Mine needed to be bedded because of poor action to stock contact which was an easy fix with Marinetex. Its now been replaced by a B&C as I preferred it over the HS.

As far as loads, mine works really well with a 175 smk/Fed 210m/Alliant 2000mr combo. Good accuracy, fairly low sd, and no problem making it to 1k.

Re: New LTR project

Karstens cheek rest, if you aren't set on ffp, sightron sIII 6-24, the weaver is another great option as mentioned.
Used 3-15, 5.5-22, NXS is always a worthy consideration if you happen upon a good deal or more coin.

If it is more of a target gun, you may even look at going 8-32. More Hunting would put the 3-15 weaver right in the realm of perfect.
But, a lot of the scope is going to be personal preference, you're looking at great customer service with all these brands mentioned, weaver, sightron, vortex... Should anything go awry.
