New Member, CZ Tacticool build

New board member here and just wanted to introduce myself.

I'm Russ and work as a mechanical design engineer. I have a few firearms collecting dust that haven't been fired in over 20 years, a Remington 870 12 ga. and my first rifle a Marlin 995 22 clip fed semi-auto. Not what you would call a "high end" assortment of firearms and had them as a side hobby.

Having not been in the shooting scene for years I suddenly got the urge to do something I always wanted and that was to build a match grade 22 with a long accurate reach. I looked mainly between Ruger, CZ, Anschutz and went with CZ as the best option for what I'm doing. Half the fun is modding the rifle so buying an expensive and very good "out of the box" Anschutz did not make a lot of sense. I've been doing my homework and decided to get a CZ over the Ruger and the platform I liked the most was the 455 Tacticool without the short barreled silencer which I can't have anyhow. The problem was that rifle I want has been out of production where no one had any left over in stock until I found a lone vendor in Utah that had 1 left so I think I got the last one available unless someone manages to dig deeper and find one. It should be released to me next week.

I'm converting it to a .17 HMR with a Lilja bull barrel. This is how I'm fitting out my 455

Vortex 6-24 x 50 FFP PST MOA scope
TPS TSR 30mm steel rings, lapped (I think the medium height will clear the barrel)
Murphy Precision 20 MOA SS Picatinny rails
DIP trigger guard
DIP aluminum mag well
Atlas BT47 PSR bipod (when available)
Bed the stock and tube the action screws
Mod for a light trigger pull

I'm sure I forgot a detail or two but this should make for some fun down range target shooting. I haven't settled on what direction to take with regard to trigger mods. There are a few options out there but I'm leaning toward a polish and new springs.

I found one of the last Tacticools without the threaded barrel as well. Take a look at the thread below. I have pillared and bedded the stock including the first 3" of the barrel channel. It shot 0.575" average for 6 - 5 shot groups at 50 yds off of a bipod and rear bag.

CZ 455 Tacticool w/ 20.5" barrel
DIP 25 MOA rail
Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50
Burris Signature Zee high rings
Harris BRM bipod

When I do 455's with a tacticool stock I just get an American synthetic and sell the barrel and stock. You can easily get $100-$150 back putting the cost of the action and such at $210-$260. Go to boyds and for about $100 ish you have a tacticool stock. Then you can get your lilja and go from there .

I am in the middle of building 455 using a Boyd's stock also. So far I have done some additional inletting, bedded the action with Devcon, made /installed pillars and Duracoated the stock. I still need to add some weight to the butt to help with balance.

Do you know of any good open ranges where I can do some target shooting just north of Pasadena perhaps up in the San Gabriel mountains? Lots of desert out here so I can imagine I won't have to travel too far.

Once I saw the 455 Tacticool I was hooked! The problem with this kind of hobby is when your done modding it, what's left of what you originally purchased?

I have already read your thread as well as a few others. I think I found a good place to perch regarding owning this firearm. This is a great site and I have lots of fabrication and design experience and will contribute to the discussion. With regard to the CZ and set-up right now I'm pretty much a "noob" and need the learn what works and what to avoid. I have more questions.

I just move to Georgia, but look up for steel peak, should be around an hour from your place

The most fun gun I have ever fired was a rimfire. Some people would squawk at that statement but this type of rifle has a lot going for it over a big bore hose. A friend of mine had one of those .50 cal sniper rifles (I think it was a Barrett). It had huge rotating bolt and a magazine that looked like it belonged in a Hollywood movie the thing was almost "surreal". You just don't carry that thing into the woods and cap off a few rounds. Lots of "Logistics" are needed before you could even fire it and I imagine its pretty punishing after a few rounds. All I wanna do it put a small projectile exactly where I want it mainly between 100 and 200 yards without spending a fortune in brass. I was laughing at some of the photos showing paper targets with holes on top of holes plus some of the long range vids on youtube. The one where a guy is hitting stuff out at 300 yards with a rimfire is nuts! I think buying and building this CZ is going to be a good call. Your right, the modding part is a lot of fun. I have a pretty well equipped shop and access to lots of resources.

I have already ordered most of the components. Bedding the stock will be the first order of business. I've got a few question on that later on.

This is nothing more than pornography and your dangling it right in front of me!

Devcon, that's one piece of information I was looking for. One guy was using Marinetex but that stuff is nothing more than JB weld which can be a little brittle.
