Hello - I am new to long range shooting. Signed up here to hopefully learn a few things and be able to hit targets at 1000 yards

I am shooting a savage stealth in 6.5CM with a vortex PST gen II and have had ok luck so far out to 600 yards, but the groups aren't impressive (around 1 MOA at best)

I also have an AR10 with a 308 upper and a 6.5 upper that I am having some issues with. I will find the right forum and post up my questions

Any of you make it out the CPM in Talladega? That is where I have been practicing 600 yards. Those electronic targets are a challenge to put the crosshairs on in the same place shot after shot.

CMP is nice and will be better once the unknown distance range is complete. Couple place to shoot 1000 yards or more. Got 4 places with 4 hours that do regional and pro matches.

My biggest annoyance with the CMP is the unmarked bullseye of the big black circle target. It's hard to figure if you are really getting a good group or not based on cross hair placement. The unknown range steels that they are adding look interesting. Daily fee $30 and hourly fee $12.50, its not horrible, I don' t have time to shoot every weekend.

I looked at Rockford, but it looks like unless you know someone there is no way to try it out as a guest before you buy and fist year in will cost $500. It is probably worth it if I end up wanting to shoot a lot of long range (and that is the direction I am leaning now)

I am going to shoot 1000 yards and 1200 yards for the first time next week, depending on how that goes I might give Rockford a try, it is not too far from me so I might actually have enough time to use it once a month. ($500 divided by 12 is about $41)

Shooting 100 yard at anything larger than 1 inch is boring and easy now.

If you are interested Robert will give you a tour of the place. That is about as close to "trying it out" youll get unless, like you said, you know someone. The tour will give you a good lay of the land and let you know what you will get for your money.

I have talked shooting and provided useful and helpful information in this thread.

If a little rivalry talk gets you butt-hurt you wont last long on the 'hide.

It makes the F Class shoots interesting because there are no circles to try to hold on given wind conditions. The stadia lines can be used to ensure you're holding in the same position relative to the black, but having something in the black would be a huge benefit.

It’s been a while since I have been up there but I thought John Brown told me they have added center dots. Is that true?

I shot the Backwoods F Class match on Saturday and at 200/300/600 there was only black to aim on. No center dot or circles. However, I shot there for some load development a few weeks ago and at the 600 yard line ONLY they had scoring rings in the black that were equivalent to the High Power MR1. For the match Saturday there were about 20 firing points dedicated but even the section of non-competitors had only the black.

When the temp is a little less hot, maybe we can have a hide CMP meet up.

I Have to get this 1000-1200 yard shoot under my belt. If I like it and I do well enough from where I am now, I will keep going.

I have head nothing but great things about Robert and Rockford, so my next step would be to go check that out. I am about an hour drive from it.

1000 yard shoot is done, I got my first 1050 yard target in 3 shots, not bad considering the wind. Then I banged the snot out of repeated targets from 430 to 1050, it was fun as hell

I get it now, need to really learn how to read the wind as the distance is all just basic math and dialing the scope, the wild cards are created by the environment you are shooting in. I had winds in different directions in the 1000 yard shots, was crazy

Without sinking $700 into a high end Kestrel, how in the world do you learn to read the wind etc ?

The Hornady Kestrel comes in a little cheaper if you have to have one with a shooting solution. Remember, they only record the wind at the shooter and give a better understand of what a 5mph(etc) wind would feel like.

Written DOPE of what you see happening to the environment in front and around the target is better way to learn wind.
