Hey guys, I'm new here and was referred by an expert and said this was a very helpful community.

I'm wanting to build a rifle for a competition that takes place here in prescott, az.

I am looking to get a heavy fluted savage barrel in bolt action, any type of stock that you guys suggest that has a pistol style grip...

I already have a hawke sidewinder scope, but i'm new to the building scene and I'm begging for assistance.

Hoping to keep my cost to around $1700 total

It's a long distance/find the target that's hidden in shrubbery and high desert/low forest.

can't use anything higher than a .308 because it ruins the steel targets i guess o_O

10 targets, 2 shots each, 45 second limit per target.

I'd look at a Savage Long Range Precision in 6.5 Creedmoor. Heavy fluted barrel, good factory ammo if you don't reload, and throw on an Accurate-Mag DBM to use AI type mags... That would still probably leave you $4-500 to play with. Might not be an ideal stock, but it would negate a lot of smith costs.

Note about the scope: I had a Hawke SW Tac 10x on my savage, and it had some severe parallax issues, hopefully yours will fair better.

Thanks for the input, i'm not very versed in 6.5 creedmoor, is that a smaller round than .380??

I've used the sw tac 10x on other weapons, and haven't had any issues...luck of the draw i suppose. A good friend of mine uses the same glass, and he hasn't had any issues like that either.

I'm thinking I would like an AI stock... not sure

what up man , found you on the Hide anyway i have 2 of the hawke sidewinders and so far its been dead on for me even with my cheap xs7 dont worry we will get you going on something asap

ok so now you gotta start thinking of what brass and powder and primer and bullet to use we will start with varget or rl-15 and win brass and lc brass and once we get a few down range move you up to some lapua brass and skin it back with some 168 gr. smk and 175 smk if that dont work we will go with some horny a-max 178 gr. after that then the high dollor stuff berger bullets sound good?

wow i was at fort gordon back in 88 first mos was 31l cable dog till i went off the deep end and went airborne and then ranger school i was at 67th signal bat for 8 months wow small world

hey also dont forget when you get your rings get 30mm not 1in. kind of sad you are not going with savage but you wont go wrong with the remmy 700 had several all were great still have one from the 90s but i really like my sav10 fcp-sr

A savage 10FP in the HS Precision stock would be my recommendation.

.308 is plentiful and reasonable. American Eagle 168 OTM goes for about 16 a box at Palmetto State Armory, Federal Gold Medal Match for about 20.

6.5 Creedmore is an excellent option, it was designed from the ground up as a match cartridge. Savage makes several rifles chambered for it, the long range precision is an excellent package and comes in a very good HS Precision stock.

I don't believe AI is selling chassis for savage, though I could be wrong. They have stated in the past that they were working on it. Kyle at XLR industries makes an outstanding chassis for the savage (and just about anything else).

If I were you, I would get one of the rifles that come in an hs precision stock and invest the remainder in a weaver tactical 3-15 FFP scope. If you really enjoy the game and stay in it, upgrade the stock later. The FFP and matching reticle/adjustments would serve you far better in unknown distance shooting and it is a much better scope. The Hawke's do seem to be well liked, though.

The match you are referring to is the AZPRC. We are currently shooting north of Ashfork not in Prescott anymore.

I'll be honest with you. Don't start out with a 308 for this type of match. The main reason why is the high winds often prevalent there. It's a long story but what it comes down to is typically a projectile shot from a 308 will have more wind deflection than some other cartridges with higher BC projectiles going at faster speeds. Another reason is that the recoil of a "unbraked" 308 has with say 175 grain bullets produces enough movement of the rifle to make calling your own first shots difficult. You need to see where your first shot goes to know where to compensate for the 2cnd shot otherwise your at a big disadvantage.

For $1700 I'd try to buy a used Remington 700 or Tikka T3 in 243 Win on the cheap. They are good platforms to start from. That'll cost you $450-$600. As you learn about what gun stocks, chassis systems, detachable bottom metals, triggers, muzzle brakes, etc you like, you can have your rifle modified as time goes by.

Some good choices for cartridges to be used for the AZPRC would be 243 Win,6x47L,6XC,6mm Rem or 6.5 Creedmoor,260 Rem,6.5 x47L. If you don't reload and don't foresee doing so the best choice economically right now is 6.5 Creedmoor.

I hope I don't get flamed for saying this but a 308 is ballistically inferior to the above mentioned cartridges. I shoot a 6.5 Creedmoor in the AZPRC match you are referring to above.

I'm not sure if there is going to be an AZPRC match in July but check out the website and come observe what people are using at the next match. You should also check out the AZ LRPRS matches down in Phoenix. Just about every other weekend you could be shooting a precision rifle match with some really great people.

i went with the .308. The BC seems decent enough, and I actually do intend on getting some dies for that cal.

I'm looking at the leader boards for the AZPRC and 4 of the top 10 are using .308...maybe it's because they're well versed on how to manipulate the round, but i'm a fast learner! I've got some good teachers, and i can't wait to get into the community and meet some of you guys!

just wanted to say hello and to c. tressler as well thanks for the info for the shoot in aug. the .22lr shoot anyway. i am starting to see what steve is talking about with the winds up there and is very true im kickin it around now for a .243 or .260 i can just down size my .308 and change my barrel and everything else stays the same. i do have one ? for who ever and i really admire c tressler and steve very good shots but b. briggs swears by 168gr. smk at the match and i dont understand why cause it goes to sleep after about 700plus yards any input on this?

Hi Shane. I was thinking some guy from Georgia was massaging Ben,LOL. I didn't realize it was a "AZ"/GA Redneck that I know.

Bob is having problems with his 260. Barrel? or stock? I'm not sure. Might be the nut behind the butt

I'm assuming that's why he's been using his 308/168's the last couple matches. CT and I will get him all sorted out eventually, LOL. What we need to do is talk him into buying a new Surgeon Scalpel.

This is the steve123, and CTressler giving you advise for the best caliber for this match. I also shoot it from time to time. And I shoot a 300WSM pushing 178gr AMAX's @3000fps...And I am considering a 6 or 6.5mm

hey again, i didn't mean to offend!

by the time i got back from work and realized people had responded to me (steve private msg'd me and told me) i had already decided to do research myself and picked a caliber and purchased the barrel/action/trigger which was a remington 700 in .308 with an AI stock >< using hawke SW 6x24 glass

hopefully you guys don't think i completely screwed myself over...but it seemed like a decent first build to me judging from what i've been reading/researching

edit: oh and also i bought a fat bastard, i'm having my barrel indexed by a guy in chino as soon as it gets in

i think its to late he has already got it but he is on a budget and i know this much , the barrel life will last longer for him then we can get me and him on a 6.5 or 6mm also i think he has the dies as well for reloading

No you haven't screwed yourself over at all!

I think you made good decisions on the AICS and Rem700. The 10 round mags helps a lot in that you can shoot a whole stage without having to reload. That means you can spend more time finding the steel and watching the wind conditions. AICS are a little heavier than most stocks as well which helps tame the recoil more. Also those FAT bastards brakes are very efficient!

If the Hawk scope tracks reasonably well you'll be OK. You can do a tracking test to see. look in the sticky's at the top of the optics forum. There's information somewhere in there on how to do it. Most ballistic programs have a feature that compensates automatically for tracking error once the true click values are entered.

I'll be getting my wisdom teeth removed tomorrow morning, and the surgeon says that since i waited so long to have them removed (should have had it done 12 years ago) that my recovery time may be a bit higher...
so this weekend is out for me, but fortunately all my stuff is coming in tomorrow so i'll have plenty of time to sit on my butt and fiddle with it all

I got a frickin infection up in my wisdom tooth right now. Kinda Mimics having a cold but with a sore jaw to. I shoulda had it taken out 20 years ago

went out to ash fork yesterday 6-1-12 with bob briggs had a blast learned alot i bet we shot 500 pus rounds with all types of rigs from 260 to 50 cal looks like my dope will change a bit for the match hope all come out ok any way see u soon at my place and we will be metting up with another guy who wants to go watch ohh also got me a .260 rem i have to get set up will be a while before i get to shoot it
