Hi everyone I have been learning a lot off of everyone and I am getting into some long range fun. I have always hunted and shot out to 200 yards. I'm starting to set up a rifle I recently purchased a new Savage 10pc in 308. I ordered a vortex hs lr 4x16x50. I now need base and rings. I do not wanna go dirt cheap with this ill spend once cry once. Is the night force steel 20moa base a good choice or is it money I don't need to spend over others. I'd like to go with a steel base and not aluminum. Also I'm thinking about vortex rings or burris xtremes. I know this has been asked but I am on a budget and I want to spend what I have wisely. I won't put garbage on I will save up first. I have $350 set aside right now for base, rings and a bipod. Any help and advice appreciated I am new to this sport and have so much to learn.

Thanks

Depends on how long you plan to keep the rifle.

.308 isn't too hard a recoiling round. the budget aluminum EGW will likely work fine for you (get the 20MOA). NF over EGW, but look at the cost of the steel versions first.

Seekins Rings will be the best on a budget IMO, though I run NF unimount happily and would recommend NF any day. my favorite rings are ARC M10 at 50% more than the Seekins/Vortex but I think they are definitely worth the price and are my first choice and recommendation if you can afford them. there will be NO difference in accuracy between any of the above, but the ARC make mounting an easy task, especially if you swap scopes often

A Harris is the only real option in your budget, standard height w/ swivel - BRMS-but then you're paying another $15 for the knob adjustment. I'd skip any clone of anything. don't get anything without the swivel adjustment and if you get a Harris you'll be able to resell it easily. see PM for more bipod stuff

and do the online training with Snipers Hide when it is available. amazing how much good information and training tips are in there

Vortex or Seekins rings (same thing), pick whichever & wherever you can get the best price, 20moa NF or badger steel rail, again, shop the price and a 6-9 inch swIvel Harris bipod and you'll be within your budget if you shop carefully. Might even have enough left over to put a podlock on your bipod! Have fun.

Looking up your scope reveals it has a 30mm tube.

I use these Vortex Tactical 30mm 6-screw rings. As a general rule, I use medium height rings with 40-44mm objective bells and high height rings with 50mm objective bells, but base height will affect this. The Ken Farrel 20MAO base I've been using since 2001 on my LR rifle is pretty high. I've recently gone to the EGW 20MOA scope base for the Savage short action.

Unless you are subjecting your optics to heavy abuse, an aluminum base should be adequate.

To me, unless I'm going to be involved in some pretty intense competition, I like a Harris stye bipod, and honestly, I buy the cheap ones. In 20-some years, i still haven't dropped the big bucks on a super duper version. This version can mount directly to the sling stud, or the included adapter can be used with a pic rail to provide a sling stud for mounting. In your case, just use the sling stud.

Nightforce rings on everything and nightforce base on high recoil rifles but I also use EGW. I have used harris bipods for years and just bought an atlas and I honestly wasn't overly impressed. It does attached to my rifles with rails quicker but for the price I probably should have just bought three harris bipods. I thought the atlas would have more of a solid feel but it gives just as much if not more than my 20 year old harris.

For whatever it's worth, I have been very happy with the Larue Tactical 20MOA rail and TPS rings that I use to mount my SWFA on my Remington 700 308. I put that rig through a fair amount of abuse banging it around on ATV's, whacking it on deer stand ladders, branches, etc. I regularly shoot it out to 500+ yards, and it holds zero perfectly.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I also have a Harris S-BRM bipod on that rifle which I have also been very pleased with.
