Night Vision New PSV14 L3 commercial on the way

After talking to Kyle last night I decided on the commercial L3 tube to go a 300 whisper SBR. I figure I could use it on those pesky dogs that keep eating all my neighbors cats and maybe a few pigs.

Kyle thanks for your time last night. I also picked up the complete kit, da torch, sure fire M1 and a pro tec helmet. Did I miss anything?

Sound like your coverd , But I would call back and add a weapons laser like the ITAL/OTAL for budget or DBAL-D2 if i had the extra coin and ditch the weapons mount ..

I think you are well prepared. An IR laser would be a nice touch later but, see if your system is going to work the way we discussed it. If so, you saved yourself some money. If you decide you want to extend your range a little, later on, we can talk IR aiming devices. Maybe even a Torch Pro to really push some IR light out on target.

I am giving the the hogs and dogs a break on my property right now, while I concentrate on some bow hunting. However, they better enjoy their rest! Come next month, I will be back at it with a setup very similar to yours.

Is it going to be mounted behind an eotech or aim point? Only reason I am mentioning it is to possibly save you from going through what I have recently gone through. I bought the xps3 eotech and had a freaking unbelievable L3 film less unit that I purchased from Frankie. He tried to tell me not to do it but I went weapons mounted anyway. My dumb ass even has an OTAL on the gun.

So I get it all mounted up in my Arms 29 and I'm playing with it around the house at night. A buddy comes over and I show the rifle to him and evidently after show an tell was over he thought the eotech reticle wasn't bright enough. He pushed the nv button and was playing with the thing for maybe 1.5-2 min.

When he handed it back to me I nearly shit my pants. Now my absolutely totally clean 72lpi film less tube has a nice blemish dead center in the form of my eotech reticle. I did the whole leave it on in the drawer bit feeding it batteries for almost a week. It is diminished but still very noticeable. Not too bueno.

I wish I never would have put that 14 on that gun. Should have spent the eotech money on a helmet mount and went that route. Now I have basically ruined probably the best performing L3 film less tube I will ever find. Well maybe not but its permanently weapons mounted now. Big mistake on my part Don't make the same one.

Mounting a night vision device behind an electronic aiming device is an easy way to burn a tube left on long enough even the NV compatible units will burn in the reticule or dot. it is easy to hit a button or turn a nob and be on NON NV compatability in a second your burning a good tube and not knowing because you may be walking and not looking threw the unit mounted on the weapon . scopes with reticle non illuminated can burn in if left on to long or the image to bright it will happen even faster. You also loose to much information weapons mounting a pvs14, you must hold the weapon pointing to scan. Between me my son and three more well equipped and proficient men with scopes downed some of hogs, But once they bought lasers they became better killers, smart men adapt when they see a better way and these fellas bought all my lasers.

I cannot vouch for what has happened with other people's systems. However, I can tell you that thousands of folks are running the exact same setup that you are going to use, with absolutely no issues. They are doing so, with great success and savings. True, most of them will eventually upgrade to an IR laser. However, we try and work with each individual and find a solution that fits their needs. While we can (and do) make recommendations based on our experience, we will never resort to "scare tactics" to get our customers to buy something that may be outside their budget. ANY TYPE OF DEVICE that is used incorrectly, can have problems. That is the responsibility of the user. Your system, as you described, will work just fine. Besides that, you have a five year warranty, backed by a company that is here for you if you need us and, would never resort to trying to "hijack" a customer from another Company.

First, Welcome to the NV world Jeff! The PVS-14 is a great start but I will warn you a NV hobby is crazy you never can have enough toys! The Helmet is a great add-on and a must have item you can navigate terrain in the dark,use your NV hand free for shooting and other task. I have several sight systems Eotechs,Eolads(eotech/IR laser all in one) D2 LDI class 1 laser,ITAL IR laser, LDI pistol IR laser(I use it on a carbine), and aimpoint. I use to be a huge eotech fan I have shot that way for many,many,many years.It flat out works it may have a few short comings you loose some FOV and light/brightness looking through the dot style sights kind of a tunnel affect but going day to night in a touch of button is great makes a 24 hr system.Lately I do seem to perfer the LDI class 1 laser systems do to their hands free nature,full FOV, and no loss in brightness looking through a tube. Plus its faster in a high speed event which could be a coyote crossing the trail in front of you. All of that said do add a IR laser and keep the eotech also its great having both nothing works perfect 100% of the time I have both on most my rifles also. Other than that you have a great PVS-14 system,Great IR Illum's the M1 is great for close to mid range and da torch for longer ranges, good helmet to start out with.It apears you are starting off way better than I did back in the day all this NV info wasn't out there so I learned alot of things the hard way!

This above graph shows the human visual spectrum from about 400nm (purple) to about 720nm (dark red) that we see during the daylight (curve on the left), compared to the light frequencies that are picked up by the PVS-14 image sensor at night from about 600nm (green-yellow) to over 900nm (IR) (curve on the right), everything over 720nm is invisible to us as it is infrared light....


Now, this graph shows what various substances are irradiating IR at night when it is dark out and there is no visible light, only infrared light. Everything on Earth is irradiating IR light at night, different substances emit different levels of IR all night long.

By eliminating the visible light you cut down on the bandwidth of light going into your lens thus reducing chroma distortion, thus improving the focus.

I can report that the IR Filter on the PVS-14 works exceptionally well at dusk and twilight which used to be the most difficult time to use the NV before I installed the filter...it also works well with non-NV red dots, scopes, and lighted reticules....as well as eliminating bloom from urban light sources...

Sky Pup,

You are letting your many, lofty degrees show from behind the curtain!

However, as always, highly accurate and beneficial information. Because you are filtering the visible light spectrum, you are providing the I2 systems with the light that they are the most sensitive to. Since the I2 systems peak in approximately the 750 - 850nm range, THIS is the light that they can use most efficiently. You filter, allows this and, as an added benefit, will greatly reduce the problems associated with visible light spectrum emissions.

It is also informative to note that the human retina is by far and away most sensitive to visible light in the 550nm GREEN light range, another good reason why the military went with green phosphor in NVOs instead of white phosphor. White being the combination of all the other colors still does NOT equal the sensitivity of the human eye to green....hats off to Victor for pointing this fact out!

Here is another simple tip on the worries of a high intensity MRDS and the value of an adjustable gained PVS-14.

Anytime you place your 14 on the back of a EO you run the risk of the reticle being way too bright due to the NV button ergonomics. Sometimes if you do not press hard enough etc. you may not be in the NV mode. This is another reason I do not like EO Techs vs. Aimpoints that have a manual and numbered intensity knob.

Anyhoot,I find a great way to lesson the issue of a too bright red dot is to always have the gain turned way down on your PVS-14 even though you THINK you have the NV setting selected on your EO Tech. Slowly increase the gain on your 14 and you will start to know right away if the reticle starts to get too bright.

Remember, ANY reticle you see with your unaided eye is WAY too bright for a modern Gen 3 system no matter how dim it may appear to your eye. Modern Gen 3 systems amplify a pinpoint of light over 30,000 times! Also, we find a red dot or reticle only needs to barely bright enough in the specific environment your shooting in. This is true with any lit reticle either using NV or a day scope at night. Ones visual acuity is so much more effective when you concentrating on a target down range and not the reticle.

My TA02 LED AA Battery ACOGs also have 2 NV settings for use with my PVS-14's, as well as four visible settings.

I use the lower two visible reticule crosshair illuminations with the 720nm IR filter, although the black cross-hairs work great with no illumination too.

You have got to be shitting me. I actually have two of those ir filters.

This is just getting worse and worse for me the more I read. I cant believe how fast this thing burned the reticle into my tube. It was literally less than 2 min. The sock drawer trick faded it slightly but it makes me sick when I look at it now. I don't know about hijacking customers or whatever was mentioned earlier. I just dont want anyone to dick up their nv like I did mine.

I wish I could re do that night. I would have never ever mounted that thing behind the eotech. I had no reason to do it other than play around with my brand new NV eotech. Jesus I should have just got the XPS2 and turned it all the way up. Same results for me. Hell I dont even need the eotech anymore because I have the reticle right there in my PVS 14. Anyone want to buy a brand new eotech. Only used once in NV mode and maybe 2 min in visible mode???How bout a real sweet filmless 14 with a reticle??? Probably not right?

I cannot express enough how much this sucks.

I am such an utter dumb ass. I have a killer set of Anvis 9 with a wilcox AKHM III on an Ops Core helmet. I have a great IR laser/Illuminator. I have the PVS-14 with a wilcox J Arm and NO HELMET MOUNT and a protech Helmet with an Ops Core Shroud. I have a visible red OTAL Classic and various IR lights and stuff.

So What do I buy....Not a fucking helmet mount for my PVS-14 NOOOOOOO. I buy a god damn eotech XPS3 and then ruin my 3k NVD. Good job bob. Did I mention I had two of the aforementioned IR filters...Fuck me.

There is no way to fix your tube once you do this. Do not believe the hype. Mine spent a week eating batteries in a drawer and it did little to nothing.

This shit can happen really really fast and you will have lots of time to think about it afterwards believe me. I am the new spokesman for not running a PVS-14 behind an eotech. I would have been happier if the recoil of the weapon would have destroyed the tube. That was a risk I was fully prepared for. This current scenario was never even a thought in my mind. I am truly saddened by this thread. I would post a pic of the view through my 14 but it would likely send me spiraling into an alcohol induced coma.

Now you are feeling me. Yeah. I could have bought a Norotos INVG like I wanted and skipped the EOtech all together. Used the OTAL that I already have, Probably saved a few bucks and not ruined my shit.

Now instead of saving up for a DBAL D2 I will probably be saving up for a new tube. I still haven't decided if I am going to be able to live with this one or not. Weapons mounted Sucks anyway. The field of view is atrocious. It is no way to use a good nv device.

Thanks guys for ya'lls input, I would have never guessed that it would have gotten so heated. Like I said I'm new to the night vision stuff. I've been shooting for almost 40 years (FYI I'm 45) from 22's to belt feed stuff. But this NVG stuff has me confused. The reason I chose the L3 tube was because I want the option to shoot it bahind the 300 whisper, but if I calculate it correctly the 300 whisper (subsonic) doesn't have any more recoil that a 223 (6lbs rifle mine probaly closer to 8 lbs with the suppessor, 220 gr bullet at 1050 fps) so I'm think about upgrading to the pennacle tube. and who knows I might pick up a laser for the 308 or if I want to take the 300 supersonic.

I know right? I dont have any idea why this got weird but it did. Whatever.

I really wasnt trying to scare you or hijack you or whatever and I apologize if you feel that I was. I dont really know who the above bullshit was directed at but it pretty much had nothing to do with any of the prior posts. I dont sell NV or lasers or anything else for that matter.

I am an inexperienced end user that just wanted to share his story with a dude so that he may not experience the pitfall that I have. Besides that, you have a five year warranty!!! It looks to me like you can mount it on whatever you want behind whatever you want and if it burns in the reticle or recoil destroys it...send it back for a new one

HarperJT: I'm planning on running the same setup when I get my TNVS PNVS-14: the 14 (with 3x magnifier) behind an Eotech EPS3.0. I also have a helmet mount + IR laser for diddy-bopping around in the dark, and so will be moving the 14 from helmet to rifle when on stand, using a laser when walking around... I do not plan to let ANY of my buddies finger-fu<k it, so I'm probably safe from one of them ruining it!

I turned my 2 hunting partners onto the 720 filter and the difference on their PVS22's in front of the acog is obvious in terms of less background and improved target picture definition in medium to high night time light..

They just got them coming into the current moon cycle and we haven't been out under overcast or very low light yet to see what happens then.

For about 30 bucks they are very pleased.

They asked me to say thanks to you SP!

Thanks, you will notice a 5-10% darker image when there is zero moon out and heavy overcast skies using the IR Filter, a little different but not that big of a difference (of course you can always easily screw them in or out as needed), however I always just leave mine installed. The big change in use is in heavy tree cover during the time before and after sunset and sunrise when using the filter really makes a game changing improvement to see deep into covered areas, as well as in lighted urban areas.

I agree the filters work. I use mine on my anvis9's they just barely catch a thread in the obj end but the image is much more defined to my eye. It does make it a bit darker which is why I didnt run it on my 14. My L3 Filmless was not rigged up with manual gain at my request. The image was clearer through the ir filter but it was too dark for me with the 14. It was probably the same with the anvis but with a dual tube setup I just dont notice it as much. With the amber wilcox filters on the occular end it is a fair bit darker.

I dont know if the filter would have spared my tube from the burn but I know it happened REAL REAL fast with out it so be careful of the eotech nv button. It can bone you. HARD.

You want a 30mm IR lens to fit over your objective lens. This is the one that I have been using:

Hoya is also another quality manufacturer of Schott lenses, some makers are just made out of cheap materials with bad coatings so not every brand is going to work very good. Bower also makes good lens.

There are many crummy plastic or gel coated IR lens on E-bay so be careful what you get.....it may not be any good.

When I first posted this information about the IR cutoff lenses last year, these lens were immediately sold out everywhere and are now difficult to get....they are sold out on Amazon, NewEgg, B&H Photo, etc.etc.etc.....

I personally have not tried this, but you could easily put a 30mm-37mm lens adapter onto the PVS-14 objective lens and then use a 37mm 720nm IR Cutoff Lens Filter, perhaps it would even work better with a larger IR light gathering source but I kinda doubt it, it certainly would not be any worse.

Like I said I'm new to the night vision stuff. I've been shooting for almost 40 years (FYI I'm 45) from 22's to belt feed stuff. But this NVG stuff has me confused. The reason I chose the L3 tube was because I want the option to shoot it bahind the 300 whisper, but if I calculate it correctly the 300 whisper (subsonic) doesn't have any more recoil that a 223 (6lbs rifle mine probaly closer to 8 lbs with the suppessor, 220 gr bullet at 1050 fps) so I'm think about upgrading to the pennacle tube. and who knows I might pick up a laser for the 308 or if I want to take the 300 supersonic.

Thank you for your concern. Assured the owner of this site has done a great job expressing just that, other sponsors stay strictly out of other sponsors type posts. We have abided by that instruction and have defended our company from constant jabs and slander in the form of public postings and terrible personal emails along with their personal IM/PM's.
