If that $2900 is list I would think $2400 would be off the shelf.
My 30-06 build:
Ashbury Precision Ordnance Mod 1 $2300
Barrel $300
Stiller Action $950
Timney Trigger $125
Recoil lug $50
Mag $100
Machine work $450
Cerakote $200
AAC Brake $100
Total $4575
So, that price is not "that bad" if it is a decent shooter and has a decent barrel compared to the standard Remington tube.
The issue is that the very same parts that are provided in the gun can be purchased for less.
The 338 caliber would be the closest to being cost-effective due to the lack of a selection in R700s in 338LM.
An R700P MLR in 338 can be had right now on gunbroker for $1650 which has the same action, 1-10" twist, 24" barrel, and trigger.
The chassis system can be purchased directly from MDT for $782.99 for the LA model.
AAC brake on their site is $150.
The Magpul PRS can be found here for $195.56:
Grips/Pads/Stocks - Stock - Wise Tactical
Totaling $2778.55
If you don't get it in 338LM, you can take $1093 off that price tag ($650 for an AAC-SD and $93 less for short action chassis). Slightly more if 300Win because of no AAC-SD pre-threaded version.
Now even if it were worth the $2900, it would be a package deal where you don't really get a deal. I personally would rather hand pick each part to my liking.
Although I like that Remington is making an effort to reach out to the civilian customers that are looking for a tactical rifle, I would prefer they bring something along the lines of the MSR to the table instead.
