New rifle, what caliber????

Ok, here is where I'm at. I have several 308's, which I love by the way, and a couple of magnums in 300 and 7mm. Well, I want to get away from the mags, but have a gun that is ballistically superior to the 308. A round that has minimal recoil is a plus. The rifle will be used for punching paper for me and whitetail hunting for my son. Based on my research, I have narrowed it down to the 6.5's and the 7mm's. I'm leaning real hard towards the 6.5 creedmoor with the 7-08 running a close 2nd. Having never shot the creedmoor myself, how does the recoil compare to the 308 and the 7-08? Also does the creedmoor do well on deer sized game? Thanks for the help,

6.5 Creedmoor is good, but I'm hot on the 6mm Creedmoor at this point based on my experience with a 6mm wildcat that I'm playing with in the AR15 format. The 6mm bullets are just great and shoot really flat without pushing them super hard. The 6mm Creedmoor seems about perfect and there are a ton of good 6mm hunting bullets that would just scream down range for you. Recoil will be low and it will shoot super flat making it easy for your son to get good hits. Factory Hornady brass is available and Berger makes some wicked 6mm bullets. There's my 3 cents...

i would also look at ammo thats available to you i got a remington 700 barreled in 250 savage, was my dads back in the day, and great rifle taken a lot of game with it but now i cant find ammo..... store guy told me whats the point in having a bad ass rifle if you cant shoot it .....

I've never shot a 6.5 Creedmoor, but based on my experience with its kissing cousin the 260 Rem:

Noticeably less recoil than a 308, and kills game animals just as dead too.

You will be extremely happy with the 6.5 Creed. If you're looking for better ballistics than the 308, less recoil and rather affordable match ammo...it's a win.
Heavy profile barrel and a brake...it's like shooting a 223.

Or with the monster FTE brake I have on my 6.5 CM it's like shooting a 22 with a really loud bang.
