Re: New Ruger AR-15...
My time with Bill Ruger....
As a young man I participated in a buy of the 180 series FA AC556 rifles being auctioned from the State Police. They were the early variant with the early fine workmanship, superb wood, 3 round burst (in the robust early receiver). Living and working in the Armory State, I new the boys and had spent quite a bit of time kicking around Ruger. This was way before the new NH castings facility. I brought my rifle back to the then gun shop essentially attached to the Ruger Headquarters (right around the corner) to have it sent back to Ruger to be rebarreled. Why? Well, because I knew at that young age that a perfect FA gen 1 ruger would be worth big change and I wanted mine perfect. Paperwork? Check! All systems go and back it went to the Ruger plant for its barrel.
Phone Rings...
<span style="font-weight: bold">This is Bill Ruger, looking for Mr. RT</span>
Yes, Mr. Ruger, how can I help you?
<span style="font-weight: bold">Can you come down to my office and see me please?</span>
Sure, Mr. Ruger.
Down I went to see Bill in all his glory, sitting behind his desk in his Corporate Office.
<span style="font-weight: bold">RT, did you buy an AC and then send your AC back to me for a new barrel?</span>
Yes I did, Mr. Ruger.
<span style="font-weight: bold">Well, RT, Im not happy about that, you see we dont sell our FA rifles to private citizens, just active police and government. I can think of no good reason why anyone would need a rifle like that.</span>
Mr. Ruger, I was surprised to see it come up for sale.
<span style="font-weight: bold">Well, selling it was a mistake if you ask me. What did you pay for it?</span>
$450 + $200 + whaterever your going to charge me for a new barrel, Mr. Ruger, and I was happy to pay for it.
<span style="font-weight: bold">RT, you look like you've made quite a purchase. How would you like to make a pretty penny on your purchase and sell it back to me for $1,000? Right here, right now? I would consider it a personal favor if you did. You could buy a couple of good rifles for that.</span>
So...there I was, in front of Bill Ruger, surrounded by all his firearms and memorabilia and he was doing his best scowling TR routine.
Mr. Ruger, I am speechless, that very kind of you and I would like to sell it, yes I would. But I would not be able to sell it for $1,000.
<span style="font-weight: bold">What would be your price then?</span>
Whatever they are selling for in twenty years.
<span style="font-weight: bold">Well, what would you say if I told you I'm not going to replace your barrel?</span>
Mr. Ruger, I wouldn't have much to say about that at all. But I would like to be able to say that your rifles shoot as well as they are designed and that your service is better than Colt up the road.
Bill literally laughed out loud and then said <span style="font-weight: bold">"that is what I would have said. If you come to sell it in 20 years you are to start by asking me to buy it first"</span> and smiled waiving the back of his hand at me. It was time to go.
I got my AC back with a new barrel at no charge.
He is gone, the rifle remains...and its worth more than $1,000. Heck, his sons are selling ARs for over $2gs.
