Gunsmithing New Savage 10PC with concerns

Been lurking for years but never had a gun worth mentioning here. I just got a Savage 10PC that I have been looking for. It is the unthreaded barrel version with the Accustock but w/o the wedge. I have not shot it yet. I was mounting my Nikon Monarch and noticed what appears to be a fair amount of metal shavings/filings stuck between the barrel and the barrel jam nut. They wont blow out with compressed air. This does not seem normal to me. Should it be a concern and if so, should I have the barrel removed and the threads cleaned? If I go to that point I might ship it off to Savage Gunsmithing http://www.savagegunsmithing.com/ or Connor Custom Gunsmithing http://www.connorcustomguns.com/ for a truing job. What do you guys think about the shavings and the truing?

+1 on a picture; your rifle has the smooth barrel nut right?

That said, I'd be inclined to shoot the thing and see how it performs.

I have the same rifle. You removed the wedge on an accustock?
Also is it new or used? If it's used and there is metal shavings on the nut I would think a check of the barrel nut and headspace would be a must. If someone who didn't know what they were doing removed that barrel I would be very concerned.

New gun designed without the accuwedge. I think they removed that from last years version.

Probably some very small burrs from the barrel threads that were collected when the barrel nut was screwed on.

I'd say its fine, go shoot it and see how it does; if you're REALLY concerned contact Savage and ask them.

One or a few wouldn't concern me much but there appears to be a couple dozen or so that are visible, so what's lurking below? I might contact Savage and see what they say. Just dont want to already have to send it back.

Took the gun today to a local gunsmith named Doyle Anglin on the recommendation of another Smith I have used in the past since he worked on Savages. He took it apart while I was there and said it was blastng media. He'll fix it up for $25.00 and relace the smooth barrel nut with a new nut with the grooves for easier removal in the future. Really disappointed in my first Savage at this point but not so much I won't buy again if it shoots well. He talked me out of blue printing until I see how she shoots. He's a benchrester builder so if any body is looking for a good Smith in the NE GA area look up Dixie Gun Works in Winder GA. Really impressed with him so far.

sounds like its not a total loss. you met an honest gunsmith due to this issue.

Always good to have local guy rather than having to mail off with anti-gun UPS. The last couple of guns I've had carried by them came through looking like they have been through the war zone. Not much care there! I have come to appreciate the bankrupt USPS.

those rifles are shot blasted before metal finish. The media is what your seeing. That is not a problem. Shoot it and have a good time.
