I decided to go ahead and paint the stock while I had the action out of the stock for skim bedding. Will do the metal after I shoot some rounds through it and bob the barrel.

I added some marine tex in the grip area.

Agreed, very nice

Re: New Savage Gets Paint...

nice illusion pattern, looks like khaki base with od green stencils an inch or so away or airbrushed on. khaki, brown, and od green paint splatter (whipped on with a 2.5" to 3" house painting brush, or the same size brush trimmed ragged with scissors or drizzled on from a wooden dowel, maybe some sponges where used).

just guessing, once again nice paint, looks like you put thought into it.

I shot the stock with tan then went back with olive drab using stencils I made up. I used some black around the blobs of green for a shadow effect.
After letting that dry, I sprayed the various colors of paint into a plastic lid and applied it with a piece of really course filter material. (You can see it in the pic,it's the blueish green square sitting in the lid)It works well with random spattering effect. Sponges work well also for this.
Just dip it in the paint and apply, you can use light or heavy pressure for different effects.

It's not hard and there isnt any right or wrong way, just have fun doing it.

On the stock issue,I have a couple of Mc Millan's and of course they are solidly built. This new A5 style choate feels good and is stiff. I need a little added to the comb, the one it comes with is huge at 1"tall and doesnt work for me so I am using a stock pack for now. I will be shooting some loads through it today and the next couple of days. Hopefully after skim bedding it will shoot better. The only thing I have on hand are 168's to try.

Re: New Savage Gets Paint...

Well since garyaug tagged this I'll go ahead and update.

Have since cut the factory 26" barrel back to 20 inches and installed a Thruster brake I bought from Falar here on the hide. I also painted the action/barrel.

For some unknown reason I had a time trying to get this thing to shoot with R-15, the only powder I had enough of at the time. I finally was able to score some Varget and the difference was night and day. It does well with 45.0grs of Varget and a 168.

Re: New Savage Gets Paint...

I had stripped all my camo paint jobs and left that stuff for others.

This is the first time I've spied a really neato paint job that shakes my faith in that decision.

Top marks, IMHO.

Good technique, excellent color sense, and really imaginative methods of making the effects truly unique.

I <span style="font-style: italic">like</span> it...

this isnt marine tex, but its a good tutorial for what you want to do. as for mixing the marine tex, follow the instructions on the product. i asked a while back about acraglass or acrasteel? a bedding compound you can get from brownell's, a 2oz jar is the smallest you can buy, but i was told that was enough. there are also tints and dyes that you can add to the compound for color matching in case you arent going to paint over everything.

Yes, I found that they make a flat clear.
