Hello everyone! This should probably go in the "dumb question" section! I just graduated high school and for graduation my parents got me my first rifle!!!! Shooting has been really fun. I don't have a scope yet but problem is my hands are so small I can't get used to the palm swell on the stock. Its really big. Can anyone recommend what stock would be better? The Mcmillan A5 and A4 both look like they have big palm swells too. And I don't know what Im supposed to do with this old one.:(:)

You're shooting it with no scope or sights?

As far as the palm swell goes, I have pretty small hands and still find it comfortable. You said you're a new shooter, so I'll ask if you're familiar with shooting that type of stock. The right hand typically just lays on the palm swell. You're not trying to grip with your thumb over the top the way you might on a hunting stock.

FYI. Not the same bigbear

Try leaving your thumb straight forward next to the rifle instead of wrapping it around. Take the pads of your fingers and press them into the front of the grip and squeeze the trigger with only the trigger finger. It should make the stock feel different like mjy65 has said.

I do something similar to this with the same stock that the OP has. I like the big palm swell.

Don't do anything with it yet. The stock you have works just fine for learning the fundamentals. Those stocks you just listed have much larger palm swells than the HS Precision stock that comes with the 700P. If it really bothers you to shoot, then save up for a pistol grip type chassis system such as the XLR.

You need to save up money for a scope system. Perhaps an EGW base, Burris XTR rings and a Nikon scope with a 7.62 BDC reticle or a Weaver super slam; you'll find lots of options and opinions when you start looking. You'll need to budget ~ $500 for an entry level setup.
