I'm in the market for a new rifle, my AK47 just isn't cutting it in the 3 gun matches around home anymore, I've been thinking it's time to get an AR15. I am perplexed by the numerous options out there, I've seen rifles from Colt, DPMS, Bushmaster, Smith and Wesson, Stag Arms, Ruger, and Blackheart International.
I have been leaning to the Smith and Wesson, Colt, DPMS, and Blackheart offerings, but am looking for some experienced advise on both what to look for in a quality rifle, and what brand might suit me best, I'm thinking a budget of 1700 on the rifle so I should have some options available in that range.

Lots of options at that price point. Personally I have Noveske and LMT rifles. I don't know about Blackheart but I'd go Colt out of the list you gave.

The only thing about Colt that has me sidelined is the 1:7 twist barrel, I've heard it won't stabilize lighter projectiles very well, any truth to that?

55 gr would probably be my lightest loading anyway, as long as accuracy is good with that weight and up i'm happy with that, suppose the hype about 1:9 being superior isn't all it's cracked up to be

Don't forget Daniel Defense, or Bravo Company. I beat the shit out of my Daniel Defense and it keeps on ticking. A light coat of krylon and it's like new..

Rainier Arms RUC

Damn near perfect and weighs less than 7 pounds. About the only thing I'd add is an ambi safety and optics (and evaluate the MB for a swap to a Battlecomp). Rainier is barely making money off them when you consider the costs of the components, labor, and excise tax. This thing is a steal.

Colt LE901-16S is a bit more but its the 7.62mm new model that you can swap out the uppers on to make it a 5.56mm. Gives you flexibility down the road.

I own LMTs but since it's not on your list, go with a Colt 6920. You'll be able to customize it any way you want. Lightest load I've shot is 53gr match ammo with no problems.

With a budget of $1700, you should have enought cash left over for extra mags, ammo or a red dot.

I've got a bushmaster AR. It's perfect for me, .5 moa with a bipod sitting, all day long. Just free float it and you're good to go. Do a break in procedure, and be easy cleaning the bore. Make sure it's chrome lined bore and chamber. Mines a 1/9 twist btw.

Mainly planning to use it in 3 gun competitions, but it will be a plinker as well, I'm not stuck on any certain brand, i've gained a lot of new brands to consider from you guys posting. I appreciate all replys thus far, thanks

Would building my own AR be a feasable option, i've seen some decent prices on uppers and lowers of all makes, might make it easier to have the best of all worlds in terms of grips, rails, sights, trigger, stock, and all,

Kiss, building your own is definitely feasible, even for a first AR - it's essentially what I'm doing now. Mega billet upper and lower, ACS stock, Samson evolution forend, Geissele ssa-e trigger, working on a Krieger barrel...

If I had seen the Stag Arms 3 Gun AR, I might have just bought that, but I do like putting it together and picking each part...

In my own opinion when you customize you have to pay the piper. Also plenty of research must be done by you to ensure that the different brands marry up and work together. Not a problem with the good names like bravo company,noveske,lmt, just to name a few but than you will have to be willing to pay a premium prize.

My brother bought a bushmaster and has never cleaned it other than just oiled it. It went bang for 3200 rds approximately according to him before he had a malfunction. Not bad since he got it for $800. I do not know if it shoots moa because he is not a moa shooter himself. My predator pursuit shoots hornady's 55gr superformance v-max at .683 moa 5 shot group at 100yds, that is avg. Smith and Wesson are very well built rifles and depending what you get the prices go from low to high end. The reason they do this is because on the lower end rifles the avoid all the bells and whistles that the higher end models have. Nonetheless, they are equally reliable. Prize is hiked when you want to have an uber cool forearm with rails to hook up a blender, and that is why you pay $300 for the forearm. Beside keeping your hand from cooking it does nothing for accuracy.

I just got in from Walmart on an ammo run and noticed they are now selling ar-15. They had a colt rifle for $1087 which is not bad. You have to realistically decide what is needed for your 3 gun competition , such as reliability, accuracy, and weight.

If you want to brag and be a name dropper and wait months for your built and pay $$$$ for a moa rifles than go that way. You could pay $$ and still have an moa rifle, choice is yours.

My brother has a customized 7mm wsm and scope totalling $5000. I have a Savage factory 30 yr old rifle model 110 with a bushnell scope. About $500 for my set up. I can still out shoot him with my savage at 1200 yds and nearer. Beyond that he takes it. But in all honesty I am military trained and understand ballistics better than he ever will, simply because he does not care. All he cares is that he has a very cool looking rifle with a surgeon receiver.

after spending most of my afternoon thinking on the matter, I'm nearly at a conclusion on a couple things. I've decided to pass up the bolt action precision rifle for an AR 10 build using DPMS parts (a standard AR-10 reciever and a customized bull barreled 24" upper) for the standard AR I'm thinking the M4 Colt at Wal Mart holds some appeal, the one I saw yesterday had Colt's Defense stamped as the manufacturer, figure the extra cash I'll save going that route can place me well along on the AR-10. I appreciate all replies
