New to bolt guns and PRS. Thoughts on Savage M10 in an AICS 2.0 chassis?

I've been shooting ARs for about 6 years now, about 5 years competitively. I've even started bringing home some match wins in some Run N Gun and tactical 2 gun matches. I'm now curious about adding a bolt gun to the stable and dabbling in something new. I'm admittedly "brand new" to any sort of long distance shooting, bolt guns, ballistics, etc. I shoot ARs typically out to 300yds using a Razor HD 1-6 with BDC reticle just using hold overs. My main goal is learn to shoot out to 800ish yards (maybe 1k, if I can find a range), enter some PRS competitions for fun, and maaaaybe enter the Mammoth Sniper Challenge next year (but I have no pipe dreams of winning - just finishing). And I don't reload. So, with that said....

I may have worked out a trade for a Savage M10 .308 in an AICS 2.0 folding stock (with thumbhole) chassis. I'm pretty confident that it's a good value trade for both parties. I'm told it was a barreled action which was installed directly in the chassis. It has the bull barrel and Accutrigger. It appears to be minimally used.
  • Is this a good platform for getting started? (I searched here on the Hide for discussion on Savages in general and didn't find much at all. Should I take that as a clue?)
  • Any known shortfalls with the Savage?
  • Anything unique I need to check for at time of sale, either with the action or chassis? Any thoughts on what a fair street value for the action+chassis would be?
  • Anything else you can share with me that you wish someone told you when you were first starting out?
And yes, I absolutely I plan on booking a 2 day "Intro to Long Range" training session with a respected local trainer once I get the rifle in hand.

i started PRS shooting with my Savage 10, and I can't say i was handicapped with it by any means. Pair that with an AICS, and I think you'll enjoy yourself. If you believe the trade is a good deal, I would go for it.

Savages are "known" for weak extraction issues, I have had an LRP that had extraction issues and another Savage that has NEVER failed to extract in over 800 rounds. If the trade is a good deal then buy it and if you have any extraction issues Sharp Shooters Supply makes an enhanced extraction upgrade kit http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/ click on the bolt parts link on the upper left of that page and then scroll to the bottom of the page that it takes you to and spend a whopping $20 to fix the issue, my LRP that wouldn't extract for shit worked just fine after I installed that kit.

I wouldn't be afraid to start with a savage. Sure there is better out there but if the price is right it will get you in the game.

As far as the extraction issues mentioned. I believe that most of them are operator induced. The savage extractor may not let you push the limits of reloads like many like to do. But if you keep the pressure down a little bit i dont think the issue is as big as others make it out to be.

Saying that my rifle has the sss extractor. I installed it before ever firing when i put it together.

Thanks for the info on the extractor, For $20 up front, that's cheap insurance against an annoying range day. It would be a bummer to drive 1.5 hours to the closest range with 600+ and have extraction frustrations kill the day.

I'm getting it for about $1500 in trade value, although what I'm trading I happened to get for a screaming deal. I'll pick up the rifle for a real personal cost of around $1000 out the door including transfer fees and everything. It also comes with a T.O.M.B brake, 20MOA Farris rail, four AICS mags, and a Harris bipod.

I would honestly make that deal in a heartbeat. I have no doubt you'll enjoy it

I have a savage 10 that I had in a manners t4 first then sold that and went to an AICS 2.0 AT style folder. I LOVE the chassis and rifle.

Handle the rifle and see if you like it, a lot of the savage actions don't "feel smooth" when cycling the bolt...however mine is insanely smooth. The other added bonus is all the upgrades available for an AT chassis are now at your fingertips. I shot a deer at 404 yards last year hunting as well for what it's worth out of a tree stand and have smacked steel all the way out to 1600 yards with it very accurately.
