I'm new to the distance shooting game and have a bergara b14 hmr and also a savage 12fv in a us precision stock, what would a good beginner scope be around the 450$ mark. Any information would help.

If you bump your price up a little the Bushnell 4.5-18 LRHSi is a hell of a scope and would be an excellent option.
Cameraland is a vender here and would definitely be worth reaching to for advice and pricing options.

@Northtogladwin A quick question....what exactly are you calling distance? Give us a distance that you wish to shoot in the next 12 months or so. We may assume you mean a certain range...and then you tell us it is shorter or much longer than we are giving advice on scopes for. Is weight a concern? Is it for hunting sometimes? Steel? Paper at 600 to 1000 yds?

You won't find better glass than this...

Bushnell will also service or replace this scope if something happens to it in the first 30 years. At least that's what I was told when I called to ask about it.

So I'm shooting steel and paper anywhere from 100 to as far as i want to walk, with property and a field to shoot i can shoot up to 1000. I might hunt with it but wouldnt shoot for than 300 on game

I've only used hold overs but I want to learn to dial as well on my ar I have hold overs. Is there a big advantage to a variable optic versus a fixed
Field of view is limited, For Hunting this is very important. If I was to hunt with a fixed scope I would stick to the 6x.

If you have a scope now that goes to 10x put it on 10x and go scan with it. check the field of view that is essentially what a fixed 10x is like.

I have one of these. Glass is damn nice. I haven’t twisted the turrets much though. Being half crippled is a bitch but I can say it’s worth the money. It’s almost cheating at last light when hunting. Wish I had a couple more.

I was looking at swfa fixed but if I go hunting for predators in my area under 100 yards will it be good

I used the weaver tactical extensively for the 2017/2018 hunting season and I spent an extreme amount of nighttime hunting with it using only ambient light. I can say it is very very clear and bright and if your gonna hunt sub 100 yards, you'll want the increased FOV that it has on power 3. I'm a FOV whore whereas many others are magnification whores.

10x would not be a choice for hunting for me. I like the swfa scopes and have some but they are strictly for banging steel for me.

Cameraland has bushnell 5-20 variable that have capped turrets but nothing says you can't pull the cap off and twist. Turreted are tactile
And audible so shouldn't be a problem I believe they are $200, that's a good deal.

Athlon's Talos BTR 4-14x44 is my go-to cheap scope. Mainly because I don't care if it gets scratched up, I try to keep one handy in the safe in case I need a stop gap or back up scope. Highest up on my list about this scope is it has an all .2 mil reticle so 1 clicks worth of holdover or holdoff can be easily discerned. This reticle is superior than most reticles in most expensive scopes!

Also because of how the hashes cross over at the .5 mil mark this reticle is easier to see on 4x than most similar FFP scopes.

Keep your eye open in the classifieds. Good deals to be had here and other forums. Don't be afraid to bump your budget up a bit and you'll be surprised how much more glass you can get - it will be worth it. I bought cheap glass in the past and I might as well thrown it in the trash for any sort of "long distance" shooting (over a couple hundred yards). Good luck in your search!!

If you plan on hunting, especially under 300 yards, I would stay away from fixed power and really try to find something under 4x on the low end. I hunted a lot with a 4.5x and there were times I struggled with close deer. I think the recommendations of something in the 3-15x range would serve you well. Pick something like the Weaver or SWFA and just go with it. You'll replace it anyway once you shoot more and dial in your style and needs, guaranteed.

I vote for a used 3-9 SWFA. That’s a lot of utility and a scope you will NEVER regret buying. You can upgrade to ZCO on everything, and that 3-9 will still be mounted on something. I would say the exact same thing about the 3-12 LRHS, but that’s a good step-up in budget.
