I just moved to Almont MI (north of Detroit) does anyone know of any long distance ranges that are not three hours away? Perhaps another member in the area with a private spot they dont mind sharing......

Re: New to Michigan

I grew up a bit over an hour north up M53; I am not familiar with any long ranges nearby. Lots of farmland if you can make friends, but make sure you have a good backstop. I am familiar with too many incidents in the area where people don't realize how far a rifle bullet can travel after going through a paper target and getting into trouble when they hit something unintended 1/2 a mile or more away.

Re: New to Michigan

ATH, I agree, even though there is plenty of open area there are also a lot of scattered residences. I hope to find a spot I can improve with tires filled with sand. I am not one for spray and pray either, slow aimed fire.

Re: New to Michigan

For info only, the Marksmanship Training Center is in Lake City; about three hours N of you. It is new and I'm not quite sure of it's current financial health but it does have a static firing line with steel targets out to 1100 yds. A bit far for you but just so you know ...

If you get the urge to use a powerline, be sure to look out for dog walkers and walkers in general in addition to a solid backstop.

Washtenaw Sportsman's Club. But it's a bit of a ways from you. It's located near Ypsilanti. I live in Clinton Twp. and it's a solid hour's drive for me. It's off I 94 and Michigan ave.
Nice range, they shoot 200, 300, and 600 yards. They shoot several matches per year and hold practices on Wednesdays during the season. They shoot Service Rifle, Match Rifle, and F-Class matches. Google their website for all the info.

Also, the Detroit Sportsmen's Congress club. It's located on Dequindre Road between M59 and 23 Mile Road in Shelby Twp.
I didn't mention it at first because it doesn't have a long range rifle range but it does go out to 200 yards. The rifle range has 20 shooting benches that you can shoot from at 50, 100, and 200 yards off the same bench. It's a good club, you may want to check it out.

Re: New to Michigan

DSC is a really nice place.

Usually if I'm shooting rifles, that's where I'm at.

They are a little restrictive. Definitely hunter oriented. But they have first class facilities and there is zero funny business going on.

Blue water seems a little more tactical or action shooting oriented. I've only been here once so far. But I'll be going back.

Drop me a PM if you're heading out. I'm always looking for shooting buddies.

Yes I'm in Indiana now and I'm using berms, and going to dirt filled tire backstops next year for additional flexibility. Wish I was still local so I could help you out.

Never been to the Ypsi place but lived right by it for a few years and heard nothing but good things. Shot a lot at Island Lake off M-59 east of Brighton, but that was only 100yds.

Re: New to Michigan

Dsc sucks 20 dollars for single load only.
Multilakes for 12 is really good multi rounds in mag and is 200 meters also.
Washtenaw has matches every month to 600 yards.
Youngslongshot is the place to be nothing compares.
The pit for machineguns.
Really not to many places unless you want to drive, never been to MTC so cant comment. There are a few more but its a drive.

Re: New to Michigan

Thanks again everyone, I shot a few rounds out of a new Para .45 today at the pit. Seems like a great place for pistol, just silly to do anything there with a rifle besides zeroing. Thanks for listing the available ranges, 600 yards is not too terrible, but I would prefer further to practice holding for the wind.

Re: New to Michigan - MTC

Michigan Marksmanship Training Center is up and running, I've been there a few times since Fall 2012. Paper targets can be set at 100 and 200 yards, steel torso targets (most w/8" reactionary center) go out to 1000 yards.

Re: New to Michigan - MTC
