Re: New to North Pole Alaska

Welcome to the Great White North. Hopefully the Big Blue will give you some time off to enjoy it. You will love the summers up there. If you like being REALLY cold, you will love the winters too.

I don't know if Eilson has a rod and gun club, but that would be a first stop. There is a drug store in NP in the mall by McD's that sells gun and hunting stuff. They could probably send you in the right direction. ADF&G (Fish and Game) is also a good stop, as they will have all kinds of info on stuff to kill in the area.

Enjoy the weather. Too cold for me. I only go up there in the summer for SWAT school.

Re: New to North Pole Alaska

Buy a pair of waxless backcountry skis and learn to get around. Much faster and burn less calories than snowshoes. The Fischers are highly recommended. Good way to work the lungs and legs over winter and ease the stress of winter. I am not a wheeled warrior.

Bust some tundra hoppers and chickens waiting for breakup.

Get a "good" fly rod(s) now, practice in a hanger, learn to tie flys, patterns for Alaska. The fishing is superb there. I like a light spinning rig too but around there fly fishing could do every day. A couple secret fishing holes in the area.

Get superb boots and gaiters, Ft Lewis Danners that get issued will get chewed up on one trip and leak. You will learn to hate the tundra in summer. Use softshells, not much wind or precip. Buy high quality light weight gear.

Save your coin because you will need it. Fun time in Alaska is not cheap. A lot of elisted get partime jobs.

Enjoy as your time will go fast.

Re: New to North Pole Alaska

The Alaska Rifle Club has matches at Ft Richardson and at Ft Greely if you are interested. We have a couple of Eilson shooters that shoot F-Class at our Long Range matches at Ft Greely.

The first web site is ours, and it has schedules and info. The second web site is the 21 Mile Rifle and Pistol club, which is up in your area. If you look on the other AK Shooters post, there is more info on the Ft Rich Mid-Range shooting. Welcome to Alaska.

Re: New to North Pole Alaska

There will be a two day Long Range match at Ft Greely, 6/18-19, if you are interested. The first day is 800, 900 & 1000 yards, and the second day is 3 times at 1000 yards. You can shoot either or both days, if interested. 20 shots for record with unlimited sighters, in 30 minutes, and if you need someone can help with sighting in.

Re: New to North Pole Alaska

IF you go into Fairbanks, hang a left, hang another left on Cushman st and go to the VERY end there is a range that goes out to 400 or 500 yards. In the winter you can probably shoot further.

Lot of guys used to shoot full auto there as well.

There is SOOOOOOOO much up there to do, get doing it!

You can go gold panning up in Fox (8 miles north of Fairbanks).

SUPERB fishing and hunting, in fact you can hunt in the training area behind eilson if there are no excercises going on. - Used dto be a Moose with a 70+" rack on him.

Also - my Inlaws live in North Pole so if you need anything let me know...

This is the cushman st range.

Re: New to North Pole Alaska

Last time I was at the Cushman range which was a few years ago they had built a berm and could only shoot out to 300 I think.

What is the story on the B 29? I am going to be in Fairbanks next summer and would love to check it out.

Re: New to North Pole Alaska

Guess it was being used for forest fires and got in the air and lost all power. I coulda swore it was a 17 but everything I've read on the web kept saying 29.

I jumped in and swam down inside it and I *HAD* pictures but the ex wife knew I liked those pictures so they are probably long gone...she was evil....

PS - IF you like the cross country skiing thing - I preferred the snowshoes - but if you do get X-country skiis don't forget to wax them LOL, took me a LONG time to figure out why I could not get moving!

Ptarmigan, Grouse, Arctic Snowshoe hares, Moose, Deer, Elk...

- man you are going to be eating good up there!

Re: New to North Pole Alaska

I'm here on Fort Wainwright AK. I just arrived last week and am trying to get over the midnight sun!

You need to visit the Howling Dog! It is a fun place and reminds me of some of the good old places back home!

Where is the howling dog at? That must be new(er)...

There used to be a great beer and sandwhich shop right out the main gate on the right, not sure if they are open, 1000 varieties of import beer and the best sandwhiches you ever had.
